Leads to ticking problems shouldn't STELLANTIS offer a recall and change part? Dorman sells it

The plastic housing has been present and leaking since the JK. My 2014 cracked and leaked with just a few hundred miles on it.

The Dorman part comes with its own set of problems, and really isn't a viable solution. This problem is best avoided by just snugging up the filter cap to sufficiently seat the O-ring. Do not torque the cap to whatever insane number they specify in the manual, and DO NOT let the dealer monkey reef on it.

What problems are you referring to with the dorman aluminum housing?

The Dorman housing hasn't kept up with the Mopar revisions to the plastic housing. Mopar keeps revising seals to work better and Dorman is like 3 or 4 revisions behind at this point. Plus, lots of the Dorman housings have casting flash on them that needs to be ground flat for a proper seal. Half ass product IMO.

It's 25.5 Nm. It's not an insane torque. 18-19 ft-lb. Basically solid hand snug. Printed on the cap of the housing.

Im wondering if Wrangler coolant temps have something to do with failure of the plastic oil coolers. I often see 215+ temps while sitting in traffic on 50F days. My 2017 WK2 with 100k miles is still on its original oil cooler but it will not go over 200 temp unless towing or climbing long inclines. Recently I towed a 3k boat , 600 miles in MO and AR and highest temp it got was 202. Highest temp I ever seen in the WK2 was 228 after climing Pikes Peak from the bottom to the peak in one shot 6-7k in Elevation.

In and of itself, no that's not much. But the torque you impart to the cap goes all the way down to the bottom; you're putting a twist on the whole part, and as it ages and hardens, it becomes less capable of withstanding that torque. Add to that the fact that the plastic is sticky, and requires way more torque to break loose than the 18 ft. lb you used to put it on. (I've measured.)

I will continue to use no more torque than is necessary to seat the O-ring and bottom the cap in the hope that this is sufficient to keep the damned thing from breaking for as long as I have it.

Gawd these things are junk...
