I don't think OP is unreasonable for having higher standards for a 50k vehicle. Lots of these minor issues should have been resolved in testing before going into mass production. Even a lot of the people on the forum disputing major issues are still experiencing minor ones. Hopefully most of them are buttoned up for 2019.

If you're holding out for FCA to become a paragon of vehicle quality, you'll be waiting a LONG time.

Your best bet will be if Sergio sells Jeep or FCA to Hyundai; their ascent up the quality rankings has been meteoric. But even if the sale happened tomorrow, it would probably be a decade before quality improvements trickled down to the Wrangler.

I hear the "jeep thing" commentary pretty often explaining away quality issues (minor or major)... understandably some accept the flaws for the joys of owning their jeeps but I still think your typical consumer will expect tighter controls at this price point regardless of the moniker on the building.

I decided today, after reading the ‘bad welds’ thread, to cancel my order. I’ve been dying for a fully loaded, sting-gray Rubi since I first laid eyes on them, and I think about it day and night, but I just can’t do it right now.

The issue, for me, is the trouble I see, and, have personally experienced in test drives. I’ve driven a couple of JLs and all had vague steering. I chalked it up to a Jeep being a Jeep until I saw all of the threads and posts here and elsewhere. On one of the test drives, I took a JL Rubi on a stretch of highway where I could open it up and it was insane trying to keep it straight and to keep correcting it. People are sending letters to the NHTSA over frame welds. Nav/audio systems are going nuts. Fans sound like jets with fully opened throttles. Soft-tops are wearing easily. Hardtops have clips breaking. Turbos are burning to the ground after being built and a sock is supposed to fix it. Jeeps are randomly shutting themselves off while driving. Meanwhile, FCA keeps jacking up the price.

I want a JL. I NEED a JL. But I just can’t justify buying one right now. I’m just going to wait it out and see what the late model versions and the 19s have to offer.

If I’m wrong, change my mind. Please, seriously, do it. If you agree with me, what can we do to get @JeepCares to take these issues seriously and produce a higher quality vehicle, worthy of a $50k+ price tag, in the coming months?
Lets see, you saw a couple cars with issues on a forum (the most likely place to read about problems) and now you are canceling your order. Hope you never plan to buy a new car again......... I mean Jeep is ahead of Toyota in the 2018 JD Power IQS ratings.......but it's your money. Just sit back and enjoy watching all us JL owners out having a blast!

Ferrari's have major recalls......how many people looking to buy a $400k+ Ferrari walk away cause there are Takata inflators that shoot shrapnel, or bad fuel tanks? Every single Make has issues with every model of vehicle manufactured at every price point. Anyone that thinks otherwise is completely unfamiliar with mass produced vehicles. This isn't having "higher standards" this is being fear-mongered by a couple forum members,

I would love to see Hyundai running the show. Best warranty out there. I've owned three Santa Fe's and my wife had three Sonata's. Never had a major problem with any of them and they come fully loaded for a more than reasonable price.

I personally experienced the steering issue so I know that at least one set of complaints are valid. I've seen the photographic evidence of the welds and other things people have documented. It sounds to me like Jeep can't keep up with demand for this awesome vehicle so now they're being rushed out the door just to make sure there's enough on the market to meet demand at the expense of quality. Maybe the '19s will be better since they're being made in a different factory. I don't know. All I know is I'm not going to order a JL right now.

Just my opinion...but comparing a Santa Fe or Sonata to a Wrangler is pointless. We just bought a Honda Accord that is loaded out. It drives great, and will flat haul the mail. And will most likely be much more reliable than the Wrangler over the long haul. And it cost me 20K less. But don't think I will be wheeling the Accord over rocks and creak beds or driving through the Smokies with the top down/doors off. I didn't buy the Jeep expecting a Honda, Cadillac, or Ferrari. It's apples and oranges.

As I asked earlier...was the tires set to their proper psi on your test drive? And yes, I will be checking the welds before I take delivery, but based on what I have seen, those were earlier builds and have been corrected. You might want to wait until 2020...since BSG and ACC is rumored to be in the MY19's. Might have some bugs to work out on that.

In the end, it's obviously your money so spend it (or don't spend it) on what you want. You asked for people to change your mind, but I assume that was never realistic. It's all good. I know for me personally....even it has to go to the shop for something, it'll be okay. I think the drives through the mountains with the top down with the Mrs. or taking some trails rides with some fellow jeepers will certainly outweigh the growing pains of a new vehicle.

Good luck to you.

I HATE MY JL!
I HATE MY JL!
I HATE MY JL!

Why?

Because it's sitting in a lot somewhere waiting on a rail car so that it can be shipped here instead of sitting in my driveway where it belongs!

:)

I want it here so that I can have a chance to complain about the ESS like others have been able to do... :)

I see the issues some people are having and it makes me hesitant too but they do seem to be pretty small percentages. I hate (and this is for everything now not just vehicle) that everything seems to be released in a “beta” status. Companies seem to take the approach of “everything seems fine release it and we’ll fix any issues as they show themselves”. I get that a company can’t know every little bug that can happen but come on. Get your S#%* as good as you can before you release it. Especially if it’s something that drives 80 miles down the road with your family in it.

That being said I’m still getting one as soon as I can. Lol! But I’m waiting till there’s one on the lot I can can look at and drive before I commit to it.

I don’t think this has ever been any different for any company at any time. Compare Day 1 product to years down the product and you’ll see improvements. It would be super rare to see a company be perfect at the start and dwindle off, and those that do end up not being companies anymore. My 2016 JK was better than my 2014 JK. Not because one was “beta” over another, but matierials and techniques change with time.

Could they have done more at launch? Sure. But where would it end? Each new update could be seen as a failure to the previous model or a bonus to a newer model. Either way, these things are massing on the road and for as quickly as information goes these days- the minor protests that exist are somewhat a testament to it being a good product.

Yes, the next one will be better. But as soon as you buy that one, the next one will be better than yours. We shouldnt hope for it getting worse just to prove “we got the last good one!” That’s rather defeatist.

The steering, weld issues, and offroad pages will probably be fixed by the 2019s and via recall/warranty work on the 2018s. The soft top prematurely wearing when dropped probably will never go away knowing Jeep. They will consider it a "wear item" and not cover it under warranty.
