@CarbonSteel, all the best with your next adventure. My JLU is only 30 months old and has been a blast to drive here in flat sea level Florida. Hope you got a good price for the Grinch and do well on your Bronco purchase if that is where you go.

Found some footage of the Grinch's 3.6

No doubt...I can see that 3.6L choking in the snow and those KO2's doing what they do best...losing traction.

Well…it has been a helluva ride and I never thought I would do it, but I said goodbye to the Grinch today.

I will still hang out on the forum from time to time and share whatever/whenever I can, but PM me if something is needed.

Thanks for everything guys! I’ll see you on the trails…
CS,

I was and I remain grateful for the intel you shared in this superlative reference thread.

Take it light, Sir.

Good luck with your new ride! I got rid of my mojito JLR and it broke my heart, but I switched to a sting grey JLR with the 2.0. Aside from not being mojito it’s OK on 37s a little bit higher than you, but it’s also a toy. The broncos look great, enjoy it!:like:

I live at altitude (about 1mile up) with the 3.6 and I love mine. I don’t notice any lack of power, but I’m not the type that drives in a way that I’d really notice that. It crawls everything I’ve ever asked it to do without issue. It’s honestly the best vehicle I’ve ever owned so far in terms of how it complements my lifestyle.

My wife loves the Bronco, but we weren’t about to go that route given our experience with Ford and their even worse reliability than Jeep. She bought a 4Runner instead, this is pretty much indestructible, but definitely lacks in power. We’ll probably upgrade hers to the new Land Cruiser once the hype wears off and we can get our hands on one off the lot.

have you considered that option? All the power of the Bronco, without being “Fordy”

I am sure the combination of 5700# and minus 21% HP/TQ is what was playing into the performance of mine. I have not looked at the Toyota, but it does not hold any interest for me.

I have had good experiences with Ford (1972 Gran Torino, 1989 Mustang, 1999 F-150, 2010 F-150, 2015 F-250) and while I may not with the Bronco--it is no less of a gamble I took with the Jeep. Given the noise about the JL when I joined the forum in July of 2019 had I listened to it, I would have never bought a Jeep in the first place.

Jeep just no longer fits my use case--maybe the JM will have the i6 and I'll return to the platform, but for now, I am going to look at the competition. It is, after all, what pushed Jeep into making some of the improvements we have seen in the last year or so--too bad none of them were in the power department. You should not have to buy a V8 to have more than 300HP and 400TQ.

I forgot to add you to the list. Many thanks for all the help/advice!
You’re welcome brother, anytime…. I’ll be a little less than useless for advice on the new Bronco, unless of course it’s a real Bronco.;)

The 2.0 in the JL really helps. It's not fast, but it makes a Jeep feel a lot lighter than the 3.6 does. Obviously, that's a moot point for the OP, but worth saying for anyone reading who might be considering a JL purchase. The 3.6 is a legacy engine, much like the 3.8 was when it found its way into the JK. Past its time for such an application.

Ford has something really good with its Ecoboost engines and I think you'll enjoy the heck out of that 2.7. Post up some pics when you do get it.

Good luck with the Bronco.
I had turbo failure and rear diff go bad in under 12k miles. And there was question about the trans if the rear diff replacement didn’t work. 6+ month wait on parts for that.

I was waiting about 11 months for replacement of head unit and a module and still didn’t have parts by time I got out of it. Dash would completely black out, lose sensors, hvac, speedo, everything. Would still drive. But would shut off at random. Usually when driving on highway, night, all importune times.
Ford told me to drive it until parts were available.

You think the part availability is bad on the Jeep. Just wait. Why I went back to the Wrangler.

Ford’s manual is way better. It’s just what it’s attached to that’s the issue.

Likely headed to the dark side--2023 Wildtrak w/2.7TT & 4.7 gearing.
hope you like it...ordered a 2022 wildtrak and waited a year and a half for it to show up and when it finally did ended up keeping "purple nurple." Jeep had way more get up and go and the bronco seemed like it was very poorly manufactured. Was really disappointed that the bronco didn't really meet my expectations. Ford has a way to go to really compete with Jeep in my opinion.

Will do and fully agree on the legacy part. FCA increased the compression ratio on the 3.6L to 11:1 then did jack-all to use it. It has had the same HP/TQ for years and one would think the LEAST they could do would be to increase the HP/TQ to the highest that exists in production within the entire line-up. LAF.

For grins, I find it more than amusing that an engine that has nearly 1 liter less displacement can still produce more HP/TQ at 7K ASL versus the 3.6L at sea level (yeah, I get the twin turbos, but that is my point)--FCA get off your @$$ and improve the platform...

Well…it has been a helluva ride and I never thought I would do it, but I said goodbye to the Grinch today. Been a while in coming and I contemplated a few things to prevent it, such as adding a supercharger or a turbocharger, but those would only serve to reduce the long-term reliability of the vehicle and make it even more difficult to maintain. In the end, 285 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque which was subsequently reduced to 225 horsepower and 205 pound-feet of torque is no match for 7K+ altitude and 5700# empty.

I regeared from 4.88 to 5.13 and it helped for a while, but living at altitude is vastly different than blasting in and out for a week or so—especially when your Jeep is a daily driver. It can really grind on you over time from the dragging gear shifts to the overall lack of power. Combine that with the inherent weaknesses within the 3.6L platform and it pushed my decision to sell it.

I will still hang out on the forum from time to time and share whatever/whenever I can, but PM me if something is needed. I have learned so much on this forum in the time I have been here and hopefully have been able to share reciprocally. I'll be posting some of the take-off parts over the next week or so. Ping me if interested.

I would also be remiss if I did not call out several people not only helping me but for knowledge sharing over the past 4 years and 72,890 miles:

I grew up in northern NM at 8600 feet driving those '50 and '60 V-8s. I recall thinking at the time that the performance increased at least 50% driving down from the mountains to lower elevations, and conversely upon return to home performance would drop that same amount. It was a very very drastic change - almost unbelievable how drastic. I'm curious whether you are going to a Hybrid or maybe even an all electric vehicle?
