So I ran an expirament on the way to school this morning. I drove at the speed limit and didn't take off from a stop light with the RPMs over 2000.

I drive a 2 door manual transmission sport.
I drive about 40 miles and about 50 minutes of 55 MPH roads. Theres 7 traffic lights. Normally on route to school I get excited to see 24 MPG. But today....drumroll, I managed 31.5 miles per gallon average for the trip. It was still climbing.

I know I was driving slow and it wasn't a very fun drive roflmao. But getting 7MPG over my normal driving sure felt great!

I had the same experience in my 2020 Sport. But I had to become everything I hate. I drove the speed limit, accelerated slowy. Basically driving like a little old man.

When we are not off-roading I have generally driven my Jeeps over the years for fuel economy. Given that, I was interested in knowing what I was getting with out new (9 days as of today) 2022 Jeep Wrangler Sport S and I fueled up much earlier than needed, just to see how accurate the gauge number is compared to actually calculated mpg.

What I found was the gauge seems to be pretty far off in our Jeep. Granted, one fill-up is hardly enough to be sure, but the gauge told me about 26 mpg while the gallons and miles told me more like 23, so people who are getting high numbers might want to see how accurate their gauge is by comparing calculated mph against what they are being told by their gauges.

On the other hand I noticed that when we are driving on the highway at normal steady 65mph speeds (using Cruise Control) the gauges are telling me that I am getting more like 28-30 mpg, so even if it is off by 10% that seems pretty good for such a heavy car shaped like a brick.

Our Grand Cherokee diesel used to see mileage like that on the highway until the government-required reflash “fixed” it.

Now we’re getting about 24 mpg and we have less power...
A family member purchased a new VW Jetta in 2012 for a very good price. Diesel, 6 speed manual. Individually, those options weren't very popular; paired together, even less so.

It remains an unmolested cheater to this day, one that returns comparatively good performance and excellent fuel mileage (average = 48 mpg without trying). I asked him to give me right of first refusal if he ever decides to sell it. To that end, I gifted this item last Christmas, and counseled him to never take the vehicle to a VW dealer, full stop.

I do the exact opposite. Quickly get up to speed, but not hammering it. And maintain my commute to work at 70-80mph. Routinely get better gas MPGs (20) than not driving that way (where I get 16/17). 64 mile round trip commute daily.

I had a diesel VW Rabbit about 40 years ago. Being an idiot kid, I lowered it and added Bilsteins and BBS-copy wheels. I thought it looked cool. It handled like it was on a rail — but that was partly due to the fact it could barely outrun a riding lawnmower. Better fuel economy than my motorcycle, and gutless.

I had a diesel VW Rabbit about 40 years ago. Being an idiot kid, I lowered it and added Bilsteins and BBS-copy wheels. I thought it looked cool. It handled like it was on a rail — but that was partly due to the fact it could barely outrun a riding lawnmower. Better fuel economy than my motorcycle, and gutless.
48 screaming horsepower?. Loved my ‘78. You couldn’t make it get less than 50 mpg’s. 180 k miles on it. Great little car. (And todays high tech, whiz bang hybrids cant do much better)

Yup! That’s the one. Loved it. Never let me down. Incredibly cheap to drive, because it was also back in the day when diesel was much cheaper than gas.

The lie-o-meter in the Wrangler (3.6 on 37s) is showing 14.3 with mixed old man driving. I’m scared to do the hand calculation to see how bad it really is.

Wait, you guys have mountains in NC? I visited twice. Beautiful place. Nice people. Great food. Pretty hills. But we couldn’t find any mountains. ;)
Yeah we have mountains. At least thats what we call those things. I have a sister that moved to Texas near Galveston. She said the locals would talk about “the hill”. She went to find it and it was hardly a lump. I guess it’s a matter of perspective.

Loved my WK2 diesel. I put a 2.5 inch lift and 33s On JK Sahara wheels. Although I had to hammer the pinch welds. It did pretty good off-road. Better than my friends Zr2.

Are you using any fuel additive to protect your fuel pump? I have been reading some horror novels how that pump (CP4?) is used in every small diesel and fails from the lack of lubrication.

No, we haven’t been using additives but, so far, it’s been trouble-free aside from the government fix. It’s getting close to 60;000 miles and it’s just crossing the six year mark.

My wife loved the GC until the reflash, but hates the intermittent CEL lights that is causing. We’ve had it back to the dealership three times, but they can’t fix it, so she wants to sell it. I thought the 4XE GC might be a solution, as they were supposed to be available for order starting in January, but after seeing Brad’s experience that doesn’t look great either. We’re thinking about a Tahoe now…
