The manual is rarely as good on gas in the real world now adays. Drivers are lazy and do not shift when needed and the new auto transmissions with 7,8, or 10 gears always keeps the motor in the sweet spot. Times change.
The manuals are better at MPG...the driver's aren't. There's a difference :CWL:

No.

At whatever speed range your car can shift into top gear and can maintain speed without bogging is gonna be the highest fuel mileage. The sweet spot is likely around 45-55. But who really cares as maintaining speed with traffic flow should be your priority for safety.

On a recent 400 mile trip to Los Angeles from AZ I found a 1-2 mpg drop by maintaining 80 vs 73- 75 with cruise control. This varies greatly with grade and headwind.
I had a 98 BMW 328i that actually got better MPG at 75 than it did at 60 or 65. You're right, it's about gearing.

I think that the real question is how many 3.6L JL owners are concerned about the mpg their Jeep yields?
Not me, although Iā€™m happy with my high 18ā€™s. 5500 miles, daily driver

Anything over 80+mph is better. The faster you get there, the less time your engine runs and burns gas. Itā€™s science.

What does it matter, aren't you going to drive the speed limit? Or would you be going 38 in a 45 because you might get .2 MPG better mileage?
With 8 speed transmissions, I would expect there is be many sweet spots hopefully the engineers worked on getting them on the 5s since most speed limits are set as 25, 35, 45 etc.

But I am just going to tell everyone the sweet spot is 5 over the posted limit. ;)

Most will do at least the speed limit. But if the speed limit is 50, and the sweet spot is 55, most are going to opt for 55.

Every time one of these threads is started someone clicks on it, knowing what the topic is and makes this comment instead of just ignoring the thread and going on about their day.

Iā€™ve found at 97 mph I can even persuade the state troopers to give me an escort. You donā€™t have to slow down for traffic as everyone just moves over!

Sweet spot is about 48 mph. Ran the same exercise, just for grins, a couple of weeks ago on flat ground for about 10 miles. 33.4 mpg, JLUR automatic. Highway, 65 gets me in around 21.

Just an experiment. No way, canā€™t drive 65!

Iā€™m amazed at how insensitive to speed my new Jeep is. If I baby it at 60 on the highway I might get 28mpg. Around town and off-road on the hunting lease I get 24. All good.
I was leery of the Turbo, but I am very happy that I got it.
Itā€™s an amazing engine.

I care for a few reasons:

1. Poor fuel mileage could be an indicator of something wrong with the Jeep. I track every tank of gas so if I notice a huge dip I know to start checking things. This was especially important on my 21-year-old YJ.

2. Iā€™m usually never in enough of a hurry that I have to drive over the speed limit so if I can get a few extra MPGā€™s by going the speed limit, I have no problem with that.

3. Iā€™m genuinely curious. Enough to manually calculate it on every tank. The TJ and YJ didnā€™t have computers to calculate it anyway.... obviously.

I get your point though; I really couldnā€™t care less that my Jeep isnā€™t exactly fuel efficient. Gas mileage has never been a priority for me while car shopping.
