.true story neighbor's cat lost an eye, part of a tail and a paw...crawling under car hoods...ya would have thought it would have learned after the first time. That ended up being an expensive cat.

I know prices have gone up over the last 10-12 years, but a single .22 round still isn't too expensive. Lead poisoning is a cheap solution

Here is a video on how to install a stick on pad heater on your oil pan. INSTALL Of course the magnetic & dip stick variety are great too & can sometimes be sourced at your local auto parts store. Pad heater warms the oil & heat works its way up through the engine. IMO any vehicle left out in sub zero temps will benefit from pre warming of any type. OE block heater was still available as an option on my 2021 but I didn't choose it as I'm not in a cold winter region & mine is garaged.

My last thread about it never asked the question. it just pointed out that the heater isnt there and im annoyed by that. Someone suggested (again - I did not ask) that I install something that I have no idea how to install.

Now im asking the question people are lambasting me for asking. This is why this forum is not friendly to people who are new to jeeps.
it wouldn't bother me if it wasn't the same 2-3 people over and over again. Its like a schoolyard in here.
lam·baste
verb
past tense: lambasted; past participle: lambasted
criticize (someone or something) harshly.
"they lambasted the report as a gross distortion of the truth"
I did exactly as @coupedncal did and am trying to figure out, exactly, how and where you were lambasted.

Is it possible that you have an incredibly thin skin? @Heimkehr isn't exactly known for lambasting people. He was simply being direct and observant. Maybe that's offensive to you?

And to be clear: I am now lambasting your apparent overreaction to an honest comment. I seriously doubt that @Heimkehr is one of "the same 2-3 people" who you seem to think are constantly lambasting you.

So as I recently learned there is no block heater I learned even more recently its about to get really cold... around -27F (-33C) and not enough time to get one installed.

Should I be worried about extra wear on a cold start? If so, can I just use one of those magnet oil pan heaters? Should I use something else? is the oil pan even metal or is it some crazy plastic material?
I'm from Winnipeg (aka Winterpeg). We regularly see stretches below -25C for weeks (months) on end. As long as your battery (batteries?) has (have) a good charge and you're not leaving the vehicle sitting for more than a couple of days, it should start just fine. If it's in a garage, even less of a concern since it'll be a few degrees warmer than sitting outside.

Windchill means absolutely nothing to a vehicle. That's a human skin freezing rating thing so ignore it when you hear crap like , "Oh man. It's -20C but -50C with the windchill. No way my car's gonna start!". Your jeep is only seeing -20C, not -50C.

If you have "anything" drawing current off your battery continuously, you may want to invest in one of those plug-in continual trickle chargers. If your battery isn't rated for at least 850 cranking amps, replace it when you can.

When you can, get an actual block heater installed. Apparently, most newer block heaters have temp sensors in them and won't even turn on above -15C or something like that so plugging it in all the time is kind of useless most days anyhow.

Pan heaters in my opinion seem like a great way to get micro-cracks when far warmer hot oil suddenly surges through a freezing cold engine block... You want a block heater that forces warm coolant to circulate and warm the entire engine relatively uniformly.

Just run the manufacturer recommended oil. Any viscosity oil will be up to running temps within negligible amount of time regardless of grade. Running thinner non-recommended oils might help for about 30 seconds on initial crank but after that, meh.

Do NOT let it sit at idle for 10-15 minutes warming up. IIRC, there were some studies that showed that would cause excessive wear due because motors are meant to run at varied RPMs, not just grind away at any one steady speed for any excessive amount of time.

Just get in, start it up, and go. Drive "calmly" for a couple of minutes until the engine warms up.

Oh yeah, get your coolant's temp rating checked. If it's not rated for a Canadian winter, you're going to want to get it flushed and replaced ASAP with coolant that won't freeze up below -30C.

Retired. Full time dog dad.
As for me, I am so very grateful that I (often with the help of YouTube) can fix pretty much anything that doesn't require "artisan" skills. And if those skills are required I usually "know a guy". My house is 7 years old now and we've gone through a buncha plumbing failures in the past three weeks and my wife thinks I'm a super hero 'cuz I just shrug it off and fix it the same day. I grew up in a 200 year old farm house where something broke every other day. Coveralls were on a ready hook next to the tool caddy. The best part is that my wife is a "lot" younger than me and she is taking notes every time I'm tackling a problem. Happiness is helping someone you love become self sufficient and fearless.

Yeah The plan was to put one in next time I need an oil change but I think ill act sooner now. I was going to get a pan heater as a stop gap but had not considered that it might actually cause those sorts of issues. Thanks for this!

Consider that if I used the word bothered instead of lambasted you wouldn't have an argument at all yet my point would still stand - that a small group of people for whatever reason single me out every time I try to post content here.

In the current example, im being...bothered...by people who didn't read properly my other post regarding block heaters in jeeps and as a result think I posted twice on the issue. I'm being bothered for something I didnt even do.

Now please just end this already and lets talk jeeps!

I have priors for lambasting and this is my first reply in this thread…I am resisting the urge to lambast.

I wouldn't be too worried about it assuming the factory uses the same coolant regardless of North American destination (may not be the case).

However, it is worth checking annually as part of your pre-winter preventative maintenance plan. You can buy a coolant tester at pretty much every auto parts store for $10-15. Takes literally a few seconds to check. Plenty of YouTube vids showing how to do it.

Are you suggesting that @Heimkehr has a history of singling you out? That's hard to fathom.
