JL welding Issues

Looked at lots of jlu and they all have slag and pinholes. Even ones just arriving at dealers with may build dates. Sickening.

The jku look fine. Occasional weld drip but no porousity and slag. The welds are painted.

I'm not a welder by any means, but I've taken pics of various locations around my jeep for you guys. Not sure if they are issues or not. I AM noticing that the paint is coming off rather quickly along welds, and there is an abundance of overspray(I'm not sure what youd call it, like metal splattered when they were welding.

Please let me know if these are issues, and if so what I can do to minimize spread of rust, etc.

I had my brand new Rubi inspected by two professional auto welders for all of the porosity (holes), slag, rusting, etc. They told me that the only thing that would "fix" the welds is to grind the porous welds down to the point of fusion/penetration. So, basically grinding away the weld past the point of the holes. This seems excessive and, like others have stated, would void any factory warranties on the vehicle related to the chassis or wherever grinding and re-welding took place.

The alternative (patch job) to not have those porous holes receiving salt, mud, water, etc. and then starting to rust out from the inside would be to get a filler to fill in or cover all the holes. If the holes are deep enough they will undoubtedly rust out from the inside, so a filler would be a temporary fix.

Sucks we have to deal with these issues at all. This is the most expensive vehicle I've ever purchased. It's unacceptable the amount of oversight on the JLU and JK welds.

Looks like nearly every, more than 2 dozen jlu ive looked at. Its not good. Slag and All those holes are bad and called porous welds. It looks loke you have penetration issues and weld splatter as well. These welds will rust.

Only proper fixis to remove frame....put it in frame jig, grind them down and reweld them. A very costly endeavor that none of us should have to do on a new 35k or more. vehicle.

YES! Those are much better. You got lucky and the weld robot was calibrated correctly on your rig. I would hate the see the frames on the line after mine. It could have only gotten worse unless someone stepped in and corrected the robot's calibration, gas shielding, or other settings.

Those look better thats for sure. Still has slag and unpainted areas though. Kinda weird that one from jan would be better, at lease in this example than those from far later. Is jeep taking steps backward rather than forward?

Mine was also built in January. Interestingly enough, I went out to look at my welds as well, and like yours, I was like "hey, mine arent..." and that's when I started seeing the welds I posted.

It seems a vast majority of my "unclean" welds are in the front end or very rear, with the middle frame welds being pretty neat.

Mine the middle are bad too. Lots of holes in welds under the doors on bottom of frame rail. This is what im seeing at dealers with new build dates as well.

M-151 cost government $ 900 each , and never had any welding problems .

Haha. When I was 14 i was lucky enough to help restore a 1941 Willys WWII Survivor. Welds were great and through that Willys exprience i new id have to have my own jeep. Now ive had several.
