Well this obviously doesn't take into account lift kits, reservoir shocks, big tires, skid plates, tube doors, molle panels, ducks, radio equipment, recovery equipment, on board air systems, and overlanding gear

CR takes great liberties with it's "not for profit" status...despite outwardly claiming to be a neutral ratings organization they very much DO accept contributions from automakers and affiliates.

And also the fact that they have no idea how to properly evaluate automobiles. CR is an appliance rating organization and automobiles are not appliances.
lol CR is just always boggled because they can never figure out why the Wrangler sells so well. By their ratings they don’t think anyone should buy a Jeep.

You may becorrect....
I will say though that in my 50 years of driving, their overall rating of car brand quality has more or less fallen in line with the brands I've owned... that's just my experience.
But I hear ya ?

In my 20 years of owning Jeeps CR has never been correct.

They need to add a "10 to 15 year cost" because that tesla cost is definitely missing the inevitable battery replacement...

They need to add a column “lifetime cost of mods”. That would drive Jeep to the bottom of the list!

No, that would force them into creating an entire new category! ?

This is nearly the polar opposite of my experience. But that doesn't really matter, our experiences are tainted by our own subjectivity. The fact remains that besides being absolutely terrible at evaluating automobiles, CR is biased and should not be trusted. That's why I have always advocated for simply not considering CR's opinions at all. I mean if you want an honest evaluation of the quality of an automobile, you aren't going to go to the PR department of that automaker, right? Looking to CR is a similar mistake.

In theory the cost of your extended warranty would be included in that five year cost analysis.
I wouldn’t say that. It’s not a service that the Jeep required. I’d classify it as an option like bigger tires or lift kit.
You would then have to add in any service work done during the first 3 years of warranty as well.

I'll throw in my $0.02 here. I regard CR as a beneficial publication for people who know nothing about what they're buying, and have no interest in what they're buying, but they need to buy a product, so they buy someone else's opinion on it since they have little interest in diving deep. That's not to say CR is lying or providing bad data, but they use a set of objective criteria designed for such needs, and that can be really short-sighted.

I realize every publication has bias, and CR proved that for more than two decades of absolutely trashing on certain car makes and models, vehicles which were arguably good and represented good values in the marketplace. The answer to every comparison was "Toyota" whether that automaker deserved it or not. The Camry and Corolla were the gold standard, and both were arguably the most boring, simple, uninspired, and most expensive cars in the used market for more than two decades running. It's because Toyota's cars fit the "every car is a blender or washing machine" model of CR evaluation, and Toyota makes a great line of toasters, blenders, and washing machines.

My 2007 JK I had close to 10 years, I only spent $ on U-Joints once, brake rotors/pads once, battery x2, oil changes every 3,000 miles and topping up a quart every month ?

2015 JK oil changes
2018 JL oil changes 3x a year.
2021 4xe oil changes every 11 months.

I’ll agree on that. The only major expenses on my 2008 JK over 11 years were the mods. Basic services and wear items over that 321,000klm period were minimal.

Yes all that, and also because Hiroshi Okuda was one of their biggest contributors in that period.

CR is a joke. CR tested my product first year. WE just said there is the product, there is the sound room. have at it. We received a very poor product review. Very next year, with many of the exact pieces they tested the year before. This time one of our guys took them to lunch, set up everything in the sound room for them. Funny, rave reviews this year.
