Did you ever notice there weren’t many public restrooms growing up other than gas stations until the number of Taco Bell locations started increasing? Then it really skyrocketed. I guess there wasn’t an urgent need for a public restroom every 100 yards until then.

You get that impression due to the offending posts being deleted.
Maybe sometimes, but I’ve been spanked twice for “politics”, when neither of my posts had ANYTHING to do with politics.

Politics bore the crap out of me, and I feel powerless to influence anybody else’s opinion anyway, so I seldom discuss politics, even with family and friends.

One of my offending posts was comparing the merits of ethanol and gasoline (in terms of energy per unit, MPG, cost, net environmental impact, engine wear, etc). To the best of my memory, politicians, parties, and political processes never entered Into it. I was simply sharing information my dad learned during his nearly 50 year career in the oil and gas industry (from the end of WW2 until he passed about 26 years ago.) In many other instances I’ve been following threads that were ultimately “closed for politics”. In most instances, although the posts may have been controversial, ignorant, unpleasant, or simply wrong, there was zero discussion of politics. I asked moderators for clarification/direction and got none, but I‘m guessing the forum definition of “political” is “potentially controversial and not exclusively focused on the Wrangler JL”. Of course, that definition doesn’t work either, as we’ve all seen fun threads blow past all reasonable limits of good taste and decorum without slowing, but it’s the best I can come up with to avoid getting shot and sent out with the evening trash.

A lot of times those threads have a bunch of posts deleted before they are locked as well

I can understand that. Some of the threads that go viral, though fun, are well off the Jeep mark. But that wouldn’t explain people getting political “strikes” or being “banned for politics” when they never posted anything about politics.

Some of this is hardest to understand in the context of other highly charged off-topic threads that are permitted to go on past 50 or 100 pages. I can’t make head or tail out of it, but it’s not costing me sleep. Lots of things in life are fullly random.

The site runs on ads. They can claim more visits when a thread goes nuts and carries on for dozens of pages. So I suspect that they are more lenient on some of that, as long as it doesn't go directly against the core rules. I'm more surprised at the threads that call out sponsors directly. Since that is the other source of revenue for the site, I figured that they would be a protected species. But I've contributed to and seen many other highly critical posts that made the sponsor look quite poorly.

What would make you think someone got banned for politics but never posted about politics? Those posts would obviously have been deleted.

Some here seem to have a blind spot to their own politics and truly believe they are only relaying fact and truth and everyone in opposition are the ones who are being political.

I am speculating but I suspect it comes down to who gets triggered and notifies the mods of whatever they find offensive that nobody else cares about.
