To keep the fun going, let's say your on something like the lip of Mickey's Hot Tub. No where to anchor for a snatch block. If possible, don't turn around and use a block to redirect the pull.

Where he was, there wasn't a great solution without a Jeep in front and a Jeep in back and two winches with a lot of winching to try and control everything. There were about 6 more technical climbs and immediate technical descents after each one. We choose the safest option of letting a recovery team get his Jeep as we were both on a time crunch and had to get back to Texas. The Jeep got to spend couple more days.....but it was based around time constraints. I was acting more like an offroad Uber driver. If possible, don't turn around and use a block/ring to redirect the pull.
Best way to learn is to try and winch yourself out (just for trying) using tree saver, pulley and soft shacklesHello everyone. Wanted to see and know. What’s the correct way to use a winch ?
Pull out a car/truck ? Or oneself ?
Thanks
I was always told; engine running, neutral, parking brake on, depress the brakes. Protect the transmission. If it's feasible you can anchor the rear to a tree or another vehicle. What are the negative ramifications of putting it in park? I'm thinking the transmission's parking pawl should protect that part of the driveline.
Maybe he was reading your build thread (destroying 70+ years of advancement one mod at a time) and thought to himself, HOLY MACKEREL!!! This forum is the real deal, I guess I'll ask about winching here. Then clearly you've asked it in the wrong place.

Realistically speaking, rather than wasting everyone's time having us do your Google searches for you, why don't you just go Google search it yourself?
I bet you there's like 50 million videos on the internet about this. Informative how to's and everything.
You could just go on to YouTube and type in "how to use a winch" (feel free to copy and paste that)!![]()
If it’s the one with the blue truck, I think it was a lady that was killed. Sad.That wasn't a winch pull, that was the truck trying to do kinetic recovery with non-kinetic straps/chains etc and shock loading the hell out of a huge drop hitch. Use a winch blanket, don't put anyone in line with the winch pull, and use common sense.
Yeah, we all have moments of poor judgement, give him a break, he’ll learn.Maybe he was reading your build thread (destroying 70+ years of advancement one mod at a time) and thought to himself, HOLY MACKEREL!!! This forum is the real deal, I guess I'll ask about winching here.![]()
Just to explain where I come from to all you jokers on this forum and anywhere around this forum and thank you for the sarcasm and jokes. Im a race engine builder and a Mechanical Engineer MS ( 30 years) -it was a simple question that most of you found lame ? Funny ? It’s my first time installing a winch and possibly putting it use in case of an emergency ! Period. Alcohol and drugs are Not an option for me. But might be to most of you siting behind your desk shooting the shit. Have respect ! What a Funked up society we live in. Peace !Yeah, we all have moments of poor judgement, give him a break, he’ll learn.
Sometimes Alcohol is involved in that poor judgement, so I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt, or at least an easy way to save face

Sorry if ya misunderstood me, AC77 I was pokin fun at the notion of finding good info here( actually you can) if you build race engines, you’re on a completely different level than I am, I’m no mechanic, that was my Best Friend, not me. Honestly I can’t even dial in the carburetor on chainsaw worth a schitt.Just to explain where I come from to all you jokers on this forum and anywhere around this forum and thank you for the sarcasm and jokes. Exactly. I don't see a negative in putting it in park. You'll also have your foot on the brakes, so the transmission is a failsafe. But, at the point of the roll, you know your brakes are out, reverse winch and load up the torque converter to back out with the line. In neutral you have already hit the winched vehicle or on your lid if you quickly turned and flipped.
EDIT: It's not like your brakes fail and you stay on the winch pull.
EDIT EDIT: More than anything, I think this reinforces using park. More than likely, the pawl can take a couple seconds of winching if you set the brakes before engaging park. (brakes fail then pawl is loaded). Would seem to support Terry's notes in this situation.
