Neutral, foot brake and foot brake for me 100% of the time.
I think you meant neutral, e-brake, and foot brake? Not an argument, just a question. Is there a scenario where you might need to be winching from outside the vehicle? If so then what?

lol...I sure did.

You mean winch when no one is in the vehicle? There is no way I would ever do that as there is to much potential for a runaway Jeep.

To play devils advocate. Let's say you are at the top of a climb, you've turned around and are winching another Jeep up. Wouldn't the added safety of the parking pawl allow you to risk the transmission instead of the Jeep in the case that both the E-Brake and standard brakes fail (let's say the e-brake is incorrectly adjusted and you loose hydraulic pressure from a line blowing.

EDIT: Or would reverse be a better gear in the situation so you are ready for emergency action.

I know it's not the question at hand, but if I'm pulling someone else out (which I assume is the scenario being discussed w/having it in Park) - I like to anchor the back end to a tree (or something) with the receiver hitch/tree strap/bow shackle. So, because I'm a MT, I have it in neutral with foot on the brake and the back end locked down so it's not going anywhere. I also put the hood up just in case. When it comes to winching, better safe than sorry gets everyone home safely.
Agreed, I have locked the back down in slippery situations.

Naw, just turn left and miss the other Jeep or use it as your brake.;)

Both sound potentially much more expensive than having to use your parking brake until you get a trans rebuild.

Reverse wouldn't be great. Your diff gears are angled for the other direction.

But, at the point of the roll, you know your brakes are out, reverse winch and load up the torque converter to back out with the line. In neutral you have already hit the winched vehicle or on your lid if you quickly turned and flipped.

EDIT: It's not like your brakes fail and you stay on the winch pull.

EDIT EDIT: More than anything, I think this reinforces using park. More than likely, the pawl can take a couple seconds of winching if you set the brakes before engaging park. (brakes fail then pawl is loaded). Would seem to support Terry's notes in this situation.

I asked a simple question, wasn't looking for a smart ass comment today !
Then clearly you've asked it in the wrong place.

Jeep Wrangler JL How to use winch properly? 1000002161

Realistically speaking, rather than wasting everyone's time having us do your Google searches for you, why don't you just go Google search it yourself?

I bet you there's like 50 million videos on the internet about this. Informative how to's and everything.

You could just go on to YouTube and type in "how to use a winch" (feel free to copy and paste that)! :like:

Googling and youtube are hard man.
I'm telling you man, some of these threads that people post, I sit here thinking to myself "how ****ing lazy are you that you can't research this yourself".

Like seriously, who wants to sit here and write out a in-depth detailed response about how to properly use a winch. :headbang:

I never saw you as a googler. Always assumed you were more of a "when in doubt, rip it out" kinda guy.

Really the only question of if you need one or not is if you ever wheel by yourself. If youre gonna have a buddy that can help get you out of a sticky situation then you can get away without one but if you plan to do any wheeling by yourself you should have one, or at the least a come along.
I agree with this, go with my recent trip out to Crossbar with @ParadigmDawg I found out that it's better if both people have a winch. In some instances the trail is really tight or not an ideal place to turn around, so specially if someone's in front of you, having your own winch that you can winch on them, versus them having to turn around and winch you out can be a real time saver, and potentially a vehicle saver. Wouldn't want someone having to go down the hill turn around come back up just to winch you out and then they get stuck or damaged in the process.

I think in general if you're going off-roading you should do your part and have a winch, whether you need it or not is neither here nor there, but just putting the effort into getting one is good for the team.

(That being said I really need to order this DIY aluminum angle for my front bumper so I can get my winch mounted before September.)

If possible, don't turn around and use a block/ring to redirect the pull.
