Nah, that's the one mistake you don't want to make. Put it in neutral, depress your brakes and emergency brake.
What are the negative ramifications of putting it in park? I'm thinking the transmission's parking pawl should protect that part of the driveline.

Hello everyone. Wanted to see and know. What’s the correct way to use a winch ?
Pull out a car/truck ? Or oneself ?
Thanks

I’ve been told you could damage the parking pawl. Myth?

The best thing I did was to make sure that I got out and watched and asked how I could help and asked a lot of questions as someone was being recovered. Then I went on a couple of "rescue missions" with a local group. There is no way that you can have too much experience in recovery.

I always make sure I anchor the end of the winch to me giant balls whenever I am trying to pull my Jeep out. Best way to use it imo. Good luck out there

i’ve heard the same thing; from guys in a transmission shop that are J**p fiends. allegedly it’s possible to put more stress on the pawl when bouncing a load while winching than when parking.

on the upside, don’t some of the aftermarket gizmos have a “Winch Mode” that locks all the brakes?

Looks like I am mistaken or there are two schools of thought?

Looking back on my notes from a class…when winching with an auto trans vehicle, always use the parking brake in conjunction with park. Using park only may either break the park pawl or jam it. Apply the parking brake first, then put the vehicle in park.

Thoughts?

I have always heard that as well, my Best Friend of almost 40 years is a retired Toyota certified Master Mechanic, so I gave him a call, and he said that it is possible to damage a parking pawl, in a winching scenario, and there isn’t any benefit, compared to setting the E Brake, and holding the brake pedal with your foot.

Essentially, you gain, nothing, except the potential of damaging your transmission, but there is no guarantee that you will damage your transmission, so it’s your vehicle, take or ignore that advice, as you see fit.

He was not only a mechanic, but has had dirt bikes, ATV’s, SxS’s, and full size 4x4 trucks since he was a kid, personally I Trust his opinion and advice, and have yet to regret it

Neutral, foot brake and E brake for me 100% of the time.

I know it's not the question at hand, but if I'm pulling someone else out (which I assume is the scenario being discussed w/having it in Park) - I like to anchor the back end to a tree (or something) with the receiver hitch/tree strap/bow shackle. So, because I'm a MT, I have it in neutral with foot on the brake and the back end locked down so it's not going anywhere. I also put the hood up just in case. When it comes to winching, better safe than sorry gets everyone home safely.
