How Do You Carry Extra Gas

Are you absolutely positive that you need additional fuel?

I've got the AEV fuel cell. I thought that it'd be useful, but I've yet to run into a situation where I thought that I might not have sufficient fuel for the trip before coming close to small towns. I'm not, however, running in foreign countries or heading to the Arctic circle.

I'm both an old school kind of guy, and a cheapskate. Sure I could have spent couple hundred bucks buying fancy rotopax, and their expensive mounts.

I chose to drill four holes in my fender behind the front driver side wheel, put four stainless steel nutserts in there, bought that Jerry can't holder for $60 on Amazon, and the Jerry can itself for $50 from harbor freight. It's held up perfectly fine for the last year.

I installed a $12 piece of acrylic on the bottom there. Though the front quarter of the acrylic broke two ice storms ago, the back portion where it's most necessary to stop rocks and debris from hitting the fuel tank is still there.

It actually holds diesel, I've had a couple people asked me why I have diesel in a red can. It's because that way if somebody steals it, and they dump it in their vehicle, they're not going to have a good day. Instant karma!

Probably shouldn't say it here, but my canister is always full. Diesel lasts about 6 months before you'd need to add some preservative. If you do add preservative, it'll last you about a year. Honestly I use the canister every three or four months, I find myself somewhere far away from a fuel station and it's just easier to use that than go searching for a station.

If you're trying to save a buck, and don't mind drilling into your Jeep, this way works great. Even holds up at speeds, off-roading, getting dirty, seems to do fine in the mud. Though I will say you're going to need to add a spacer on one of the screws you put in because the fender is not 100% flat.

I never thought it was worth bothering with, especially gasoline. Even in Alaska fuel stations are pretty much within reach even the Dalton highway is couple hundred miles between fuel. Well within reach.

But just my opinion.

On my JK o had a roofrack mounted rotopax. Didn't think to grab it when it was rear ended and totalled. I grabbed my battery fridge and subwoofer lol

Think I will do the same to the JL, mount it to the roofrack, cheapest route. Just need a mounting plate, rotopax mount and the fuel can. Less than 200 bucks for everything, 300 if I want 5 gallons.

I was thinking about getting the Molly panel for the inside tailgate from Metalcloak and attaching a rotopax inside. But I’ve honestly not needed the extra supply.
