I'm planning to run Dusy with my 3.6L JLUR and was wondering if a 4 gal Rotopax will be enough extra gas. First timer.

When I calculated my fuel burn (notice I didn't use the word "economy" 🤣 ) on Rubicon, I was getting around 1.6 mpg. That says I'm going to need 20 gal just for the 33 miles of trail. Sounds pretty close, figuring gasing up at Dinky Creek General Store, 23 miles to the trailhead, 33 miles of trail, then 27 miles down to Shaver Lake for gas.

Jokes aside, I think your numbers are off by a factor of 10. Do you drive an M1 Abrams or something? :CWL:

EDIT: Ohhh I see, you're asking about trail miles.

Well, it's about as heavy as an M1, anyway.

We ran it in our 2019 JLUR on 37 with the 2.0t
Gassed up in Madera, drove up to the northern trailhead late that night and missed the last has station. Ran the entire trail and made it back to shaver on fumes. No added fuel. Wouldn't recommend pushing it that far, but you'd be fine gassing up in shaver lake and running the trail. Even all day in 4LO we've never got less than 10mpg from the JLUR with the 3.6L and 39s.

In 4LO with frequent get out and spot moments and hold-ups I think 1.6mpg is about right.

For $25 I'd buy another HF 5 gallon can. I carried two earlier this year inside the Jeep and had no problem with fumes or leaks. (To disable the EPA spout remove one O-ring).

My concern would be the off camber sections at the end and all the gas going to the wrong side of the tank, although with our tanks the pitch is worse for the fuel pickup.

My logic is that $25 reliefs more than $25 worth of stress when you start continuously mentally calculating distance to the next stop and then your consumption over the last couple of miles.

1.6mpg is absurd. Even wheeling my old wagoneer on 42s with a carburetor and a 360ci v8 it would get at least 5mpg. The 20 gallons in a JLU would last 32 miles? The rubicon is only 18, but you're probably looking at ~80 miles by the time you get gas at either end. Dozens of rubicon trips and never once ran out of gas. As I said earlier (yes the 2.0t gets a little better fuel economy) we gassed up in Madera, drove 88 miles to the trail head, ran the 34 mile trail, and drove 20 miles back to town on 1 tank of gas. That's a minium of 7.1mpg. Unless you idle all day while entire groups struggle through obstacles or wrench on a broken rig blocking the trail there's no chance you can't make 65 miles on a tank of fuel in order to run the trail with no extra gas. If you're stopped for extended periods, shut the Jeep off?
