Well. I would say getting Tboned is a much lower probability than getting rear ended but I see your point. I did consider this but... choices must be made. The can mount is higher than 90% of the bumpers out there is the world. I will keep my eyes open to the left. :DThose side mounts terrify me.
Imagine getting t-boned, it wouldn’t take much of an impact to cause that can to burst and the outcome is right in the drivers face.
On my previous LJ’s and TJ’s I had a carrier mounted on the Bestop tire carrier up above the passenger side tail light. I made sure it was mounted high enough that if I did get rear-ended most vehicles would hit under the fuel can.
The tray doesn't look like it came from Moryde. Any pointers on where you got it?This is working out pretty well... Found a morryde drivers side mount as open box on extreme terrain for 56 bucks.![]()

Complicated? It doesn't get any more simple than this.I've got a two-door JL whos being modded for Overlanding and I need some extra fuel. The most common way I've seen is something off the spare tire but with the backup camera, it gets complicated. Please share your opinions, mods, or different solutions. Pictures of your mods are more than welcome.
AND... drilled the can mount to fit the welded mounts nuts in the plate.
I carry a NATO 20 L can on the passenger side of the spare tire, much like this new option shown in the link above. I use a Maximus-3 gerry can mount bolted to a Terraflex HD hinge reinforcement. The Maximus-3 gerry can mount has a separate lower cradle and an upper clamp, so it's relatively lightweight for a steel mount. Before that I used the typical gerry can mount you see on ebay--steel strap cage, which I drilled to fit the Terraflex mount points. That worked ok but the ebay cage mount is heavier, badly painted so it corrodes, and not as secure, so I was happy to upgrade. This company just joined the forum. Pretty pricey but it is another option.
Can you please post up pics of this? Both with and without the can, if possible.I carry a NATO 20 L can on the passenger side of the spare tire, much like this new option shown in the link above. I have the Gerry can next to a 35" Ko2 spare and that's the maximum size spare I could see working with this gerry can mount to tailgate and still be able to fully open the tailgate. Even then, it wouldn't open fully with the can in place if I had the stock tail lights. I have the Oracle flush mount trail lights that add an inch or inch and a half of clearance for the can. ---yep, you never expected the flush tail lights to have an actual practical advantage, haha. Neither did I but there it is.
What’s that one?Like this
