Those side mounts terrify me.
Imagine getting t-boned, it wouldn’t take much of an impact to cause that can to burst and the outcome is right in the drivers face.

On my previous LJ’s and TJ’s I had a carrier mounted on the Bestop tire carrier up above the passenger side tail light. I made sure it was mounted high enough that if I did get rear-ended most vehicles would hit under the fuel can.

Well. I would say getting Tboned is a much lower probability than getting rear ended but I see your point. I did consider this but... choices must be made. The can mount is higher than 90% of the bumpers out there is the world. I will keep my eyes open to the left. :D

The tray doesn't look like it came from Moryde. Any pointers on where you got it?

I've got a two-door JL whos being modded for Overlanding and I need some extra fuel. The most common way I've seen is something off the spare tire but with the backup camera, it gets complicated. Please share your opinions, mods, or different solutions. Pictures of your mods are more than welcome.
Complicated? It doesn't get any more simple than this.

This company just joined the forum. Pretty pricey but it is another option.
I carry a NATO 20 L can on the passenger side of the spare tire, much like this new option shown in the link above. I use a Maximus-3 gerry can mount bolted to a Terraflex HD hinge reinforcement. The Maximus-3 gerry can mount has a separate lower cradle and an upper clamp, so it's relatively lightweight for a steel mount. Before that I used the typical gerry can mount you see on ebay--steel strap cage, which I drilled to fit the Terraflex mount points. That worked ok but the ebay cage mount is heavier, badly painted so it corrodes, and not as secure, so I was happy to upgrade.

I have the Gerry can next to a 35" Ko2 spare and that's the maximum size spare I could see working with this gerry can mount to tailgate and still be able to fully open the tailgate. Even then, it wouldn't open fully with the can in place if I had the stock tail lights. I have the Oracle flush mount trail lights that add an inch or inch and a half of clearance for the can. ---yep, you never expected the flush tail lights to have an actual practical advantage, haha. Neither did I but there it is.

I have the same skepticism Ratbert mentioned about how often you really need to carry extra gas. But the set-up is still worth it I find because I can carry a Front Runner nato water can there instead of gas, and free up space inside a 2door for overlanding trips.

Flimsy as it is, the ebay strap cage had a built in way to lock the can's gas cap, and I think it's worth thinking about security like that for your road stops on the way to the trail. I haven't figured out a lock for the Maximus-3 gerry can yet. It would be almost too easy to punch a hole in the bottom anyway and drain it into a bucket if someone really wanted that gas.

But the security concerns like that is specific to the trip. For me, this kind of gerry can mount is something that comes off, along with the RTT and awnings, as soon as I'm back from the trip. People who like like to drive around town all the time with their vehicle set up for overlanding will have more reasons to think about security of their gerry can, high lift, shovel, and pick. I see lots of 4runners around town where I live in full cos-play set-up. Very shiny stuff that looks like it's never seen a trail.

Can you please post up pics of this? Both with and without the can, if possible.

Don’t actually carry gas in the jerry can; just part of my Jeep’s “1941” uniform.

After years of using plastic 2G RotoPAX fuel containers, I decided to move up to a Wavian (NATO) Jerry Can in Red, and their mount. Mounting the mount onto RockSlide Engineering’s spate tire mounting solution, using high grade nuts/bolts/washers. Will mount with water in it as a test in the coming days.
