Hi,

Try to replace the heater, I'm sure you will never see 240f again.
When I had the issue 8 called ZF technical support and the tech guy told me that the heater valve should get fully open once reach to 180f. He said healthy temp for this transmission is 180f to 220/230f.
He was the one who actually told me that the issue I have is for sure the heater valve..
I'm towing smittybilt scout ovarland trailer with 4 person tent on it and water tank, never got more then 208f since I replace this part.

Good luck.
Thank you, I’m going to dealer tomorrow and going to present them all my finding, hopefully get it taken care of under the warranty. I pretty sure this valve is what caused my first transmission to burn up. On the way home from dealership after having transmission replaced it got up to 250 just doing 70 on freeway. What kind of upsets me is that I called three different deanships and they all told me that those temps are fine.

This is the new heater/valve body. Note that the end with the guts there is not a thermostatic valve. It appears to be a sort of pressure regulator. The heater is pretty much full flow and there is a smaller pressure bypass valve (arrow) and passage.

Waiting to see how this turns out for you. I took mine to the dealership today and they said it was normal, even though I know my temps are high. If I start the Jeep and just let it idle, the trans temp will sit around 203. If I drive for 30 minutes or so, it will be between 212 to 224. If I tow my jetski trailer it will hit 237. Dealer blamed my 35" tires, but that really doesn't explain the 203 trans temp at idle.

The annoying this is the cooling fan hits max jet-engine speed somewhere between 212 to 224, and once the fan hits that speed it will not shut off, even if the temp drops back below 200, you have to restart the engine to make the fan stop. It's pretty loud and honestly embarrassing to pull into a parking lot with a Jeep that sounds like it's about to explode.

You don't have the temp readouts on the dash screen (not the radio head unit)??

Ours is a Sport S so maybe that's an extra feature, but I would think even the base would have that info.

Yes, we do. Use the left-side button panel on the steering wheel to scroll through the different engine data displays on the central TFT screen:

Coolant temp
Transmission temp
Oil temp
Oil pressure
Etc.

?

You may have to press said button up or down to get to this particular row of data, after which you can press left/right to view each data screen.

Thanks for the clarity, I assumed all the JLs even the most base models had that info.

So I ended up ordering new transmission bypass heater. We installed it today. The new part DOESN'T have the bypass valve in it, they redesign this heater.

So I ended up ordering and installing new transmission heater for the jeep, mopar part 68485460AB. When I received this part by mail I notice it look different then the the heater that the jeep came with from the dealer. The heater they send me have NO bypass valve in it.. my transmission doesn't pass 195 - 205F after installing the new part, on road or off road. Its just unbelievable. transmission heater cost me $150 after tax and delivery install was $450 (didn't install it at the dealer).

Apparently for "some" reason Part #68485460AB is replacing part #68233384AB which is the original transmission heater came with the jeep..

Attached is a picture of the old transmission heater, the bypass valve is where the mark is.. if your transmission is getting hot this pc might be the reason and that's exactly what ZF technician told me over the phone when I started asking questions about why my transmission is getting so hot.
Again, the new part does not have this valve there.

This is the link for mopar where its also mention part 68485460AB is replacing part 68233384AB. I would call them and give them vin number just to confirm it's actually fit to your jeep.

This information is available in the Base Sports as well (non-S). The same way we cycle through to view air pressure on the tires is how we can see trans temp, coolant temp, oil pressure, battery voltage, etc. it’s all available.

@JeepCares YOU NEED TO READ THE POST. EVEN ZF Manufacture of the transmission is saying there is a problem with the transmission heaters and the Part has been updated. you need to open a ticket with the dealership to have this replaced. anything higher that 240 typically grenades an automatic transmission. this is simply known logic for 40+years! IMO 220/230 is way to hot even for towing. I Have had many trucks including my 1976 GMC towing my boat and have never seen over 210 degrees. with outside air temps reaching 110-120 degrees not including asphalt temps into the 150-180 degrees. AGAIN 240degrees IS TO HOT. plus your statement says IF EQUIPPED. Doesnt mean its set to the correct safe Temp either. Jeep is failing on the AUTO trans
