Going through the same.
I sat down with the dealer tech/trans specialist and this is how it works.
- the tech does the initial inspection and reports finds ie codes, symptoms etc. to Stellantis warranty department before transmission is even opened up ( no sense wasting time opening it up without parts on hand).
- Stellantis makes the decision to order TCM/Valve body combo before transmission is opened up. (TCM - transmission Control Module and valve body are together inside the transmission).
- If the transmission is found to have excess shavings, burnt oil, parts on the magnet etc when the tech opens it up they will then authorize a new transmission.
-If everything looks good they will change the TCM/Valve body.
- if that does not fix the issue a complete transmission and torque converter will then be ordered.

If the transmission is noticeably slipping then that is the clutchs which the valve body/TCM swap cannot fix. Hence they went right to new trans.

Sadly, I am in the same boat. 2020 JL Sport. Automatic. Just under 30k miles. First symptom is a delay and then hard shift into reverse each morning. Hard enough to chirp the tires in my garage. Second symptom is hesitation to shift up/down in the 20 - 30 mph range. Third symptom is the check engine lights up. Parked it in the garage once the lamp lit up.

Two area dealerships don't have a transmission tech. So, I contacted another. Took a week to get it into the dealership. So far it has been two weeks and two days with no decision from Chrysler to replace the valve body or just proceed with transmission replacement. Dealer has sent fluid samples and then pictures to Chrysler. Dealer is trying but must wait on Chrysler to provide a loaner.

I waited years to finally buy a Wrangler. The poor warranty service is enough to make me sell it before the powertrain warranty expires. Well, that and the recall for the death wobble, frame stud removal. Oh, and both batteries were dead and had to be replaced. I was aware of Wrangler quality issues and history before buying it, but sheesh. I don't want to drive it farther than the city limits because it is not reliable.

Wish I knew how to escalate my existing case and get it fixed. Maybe @JeepCares can help with my case #86886563.

The only good news is this happened in town and not while I was 1,000 miles away on my Florida vacation.

You might get more useful responses if you specified the engine/transmission in your Jeep.

In general. current supply chain issues might explain the delay.
Update!!!!jeep is back at the dealership getting a now 3rd transmission. Same symptoms as before. This time they are also changing the transmission cooler and the transmission lines. After getting it back it was fine it seamed to go back to the same symptoms as before. Jerking from 2nd to 3rd sometimes higher rpm to shift. Finally if got stuck in 3rd gear on my way to work I pulled over, turned off the Jeep and restarted it. It seamed fine. I then took it right to the dealership and it’s been 6 more weeks . They are telling me I should have it back by the end of next week.

My dealer is waiting for them to approve a new transmission for my 2021 3.0T Diesel.

About two weeks ago with 45,000 miles my jeep did something funny. First the idle that never varies since new, bobbled similar to contaminated fuel in a gas engine. It only bobbled for about 1-2 min. then cleared up. No alerts on the dash board at all and I replaced the filter at about 16,000 so a long way from 30. I never let the fuel get below 1/2 tank and I've been told the dealership has checked it for water at every oil change. 6-8k per oil change.

Next event about two days later, driving along FDH, and boom. I hear a loud bang. The jeep shuddered with a single pulse. The engine seemed to die at the same time it shuddered. It only seemed to last a few seconds. I think the gauges dropped to 0. But don't remember for sure. Not one alert light activated on the dash. It started running again like nothing happened. Drove home normally.

The next day about 20 minutes into 45 min drive from home, 35-50 mph. It did the same thing again. At that point I decided I didn't want to have to tow it so I was going to take it to dealership on the way home from the doctors. Again, no sound like engine died, big pop along with shudder.

I continued to my DR appointment with some freeway and did it one more time. This time the dashboard lit like a Christmas tree and said something big RED "BREAK" Flashed momentarially across the Hud. This time the check engine light came on and stayed on. I continued to the Dr. Office and pulled into the parking area.

At no time did I get any water in the fuel alerts.

When I came out from the office, I started the jeep and the check engine light was on again. I put the trans into park. The jeep went back about two foot, big boom like I hit something and the engine died. (I checked before backing and no one was behind me.) When I looked down the light under the shifter still in "R" was flashing. I got out to assure I didn't hit anyone/thing. Nope, all clear. My door was closed and my seatbelt was on when it happened.

I got back in. Put the shifter in park. The jeep started right up and the check engine light was off. I drove directly to my dealership, 35-60 on freeway. And told them what was up.

They checked it out the next day. Plus (side note) my jeep sent me an email telling me to take the jeep to the dealership, LOL! They were able to re-create the problems except the idle. So they sent the info to folks who approve the fixes. This was several days of looking and sending info to the decision $$$ makers. They ordered the valve body and got approval for that but were told to pull the pan.

And what do you think they found??? Ground round metal shavings! Lots of them. They showed me the picture cause they had to put it all back together and wait for approval to replace the tranny. That was last Thursday and we are still awaiting approval as of Friday night.

Small side note. We had a paid for vacation in Moab from the 5th to the 15th (2 jeeps) with the Lady Jeepers Club, Calhoun, GA. We were taking our kids/grandkids, two jeeps, and a cargo trailer with the camping gear. My wife has a 2020 JLU sport 2.0. Her's is all lifted and stuff. Lucky, the club is letting us transfer the fees to next years trip.

So now just waiting to find out when I get my jeep back. I really appreciate my dealership. Despite my constant checking in hoping to still make the Sep 5th take off for the Moab trip. Once they found the shrapnel, it was all stop. We have to replace the trans.

I find it sucks my transmission blew up at 45,000 miles. Up to this point it had been driven on nothing more than a dirt road or two. She was bone stock till two months ago. I did not do one thing to the jeep till getting ready for our trip to Moab on a Maiden Voyage Adventure. Till now 99.99% paved, as my wife likes us to use her lifted Pear Bikini Blue named Swegian. Turns out, I got my jeep all dressed up with no where to go.

Thank God for it not failing on the way to Moab with the kids and grandkids in tow, but I sure wish I knew why it blew up.

So far, no answers to that "who done it?"

I'm going to spitball here. People that are posting here have never had an automatic trans apart or even taken classes on how to diagnose, and rebuild one. Most just watch videos and are experts.
No ..S_ _T A lot of big mouths. Trying to put two cents in when they only have a penny.

Glad to see a post on transmissions issues with JLs. I took my 2022 Wrangler JL Rubicon in for an oil change two weeks ago (~13,500 miles) and mentioned that I hear a "ting-ting" sound when I back my Jeep into my garage. Long story short, Jeep is replacing my transmission and they are still waiting on the parts to come in. I didn't know that this was a issue, but my dealership alluded to it being pretty common.

Well 9/27/23 Got the 21 Rebicon back. Long story short. A little miscommunication at the dealership led to the new transmission being ordered a week late.

Now my dealership Karmart Dodge/Jeep Sedro Woolley, WA did me a real solid.

Carlos is the new service manager and His boss Caleb I've been working with for almost 12 years and multiple vehicles purchased/serviced.

I had purchased a BodyArmor bumper/tire carrier combo and had planned on installing it myself after we returned from Moab. We'll you already know the story of the missed/delayed till next year Moab trip.

They installed it for me. So now I'm deciding how I'm going to hook up all my lights and stuff. It was real nice to have the heavy work already done. I had to cut some of the 21 rear camera bracket to modify the one that came with the tire carrier. It was designed to accept the previous generation of back up cameras.

Another side note and repair covered under warranty on this trip into the shop.

Prior to our trip I purchased some Midland communication radios for both mine and my wife's jeep. When installing mine, getting ready to hook up the positive lead I notice the three studded piece on my top battery positive terminal was a little off. The stud closest to the windshield, the 90 degree wire end/flange was not seated on the post. A little inspection and it had been shipped like that from the factory with a crossthreaded nut. So torq on the wire was all that kept it from moving and possibly shorting.

I went into my favorite parts guy at the dealership Jeremy. He started a several week proces to find that bracket. Next time
there I showed Caleb. It had clearly been shipped new from the factory that way. Turns out that do-dad is a part of the several 100$$$ wire harness for the dual battery set-up. I had no known issues at all with my jeep before the transmission blew up.

So we don't know why the Trans blew up but there sure are a lot of electrical wizardry involved to get 25 round town and 29 on the freeway out of that diesel. I maybe shifted it into 2 wheel high twice on dusty roads just to make sure it worked.

Well, now it's time to get back to Adventuring.

I thank the members of Karmart we have built a relationship with for the professional response to our Jeeps ills and repair.

Question. How did you know the transmission was slipping? Does it upshift and rev really high? Seriously. I want to know. I have a 2019 JLUR and hearing everyone's issues makes me a bit paranoid that I am not experiencing any of the issues like fuses, wandering, dead spots in steering, bad welds, etc. Heck, I installed the ACE sliders without breaking a body bolt and ordered a steel steering box when I eventually experience the steering issues that everyone is experiencing. Maybe I'm just lucky, probably not. LOL. I think I'm oblivious and need to pay more attention to every noise my Jeep makes.
These threads give me nightmares ? I'm like a Jeep hypochondriac
