What a guy! You could tell he was a bit rattled, but geeze, who wouldn't be. Watching it, I was thinking he was potentially making a bad decision using more water to fight the fire, leaving less for him to survive on. But he mentioned he had another 6 gallons of water. He knew his resources and gear, no question. I think he knew as soon as he had his emergency pack that he would not have to worry about surviving more than a day out there. He had his communication device and likely had made contact with his recue resources.
You are the type of friend that I try to be and I have friends like you. I have many long term friends. After getting into Jeeps, I got a new Jeeping friend, great dude. We would often wheel and camp together. One Saturday afternoon, I get a call from him. He says that he is out Jeeping and has gotten stuck and is unable to get out. He tells me where he is and it is about 130 miles away and asked if I can come rescue him and his wife. I am in the middle of some stuff, and say, Its going to take me about 15 minutes to gather my stuff and I will head out. There is a deep pause, and he says, Don't worry bud, I am good, I was just checking to see if you would come get me if I needed it. A test one might say..... I tease him about it to this day. I passed the test he called the fair weather friend or a friend test....
Sounds like the boy who cried wolf to me, just might tell him I'm on the way next time... and test his patience.
He was not crying wolf, he followed up with, that he keeps his circle of friends small and only keeps quality people in his life. He is a great guy. Like we were traveling this year, and Carla wanted a new camper, I keep my money in the market, so it takes a day or two to get access to larger amounts of cash. Gary is like, here is $25,000 in cash go get it and pay me back when you can. I ended up not buying the camper as it was just to much for the Jeep. Gary usually has cash on him. Gary was giving me a ride up to pick up my Jeep from it getting re-geared, I left the house and forgot to grab my wallet. Not something that I would normally do. We were about two miles from the house, I am like fuck, turn around, I forgot my wallet. He was like, I got you and paid the bill. He lives close by, so when I got home, grabbed money out of the safe and took it over tom him. He is a real dude and a great friend and I have reciprocated the same type of friendship back to him. He is ride and die kind of guy. The kind you call to bury a body...
