This thread is very useful. We've experienced this issue twice now.

We have a 2020 2.0 etorque and had experienced this issue running up Poughkeepsie Gulch trail last year with ambient outside temperature running around 40F. We stopped and let the temps cooldown. We were in 4H the whole way up. Temps topped at above 250 maybe even higher...

Experienced this again recently, similar situation on a prolonged uphill ascent in 4H for at least 2hours.

The vehicle has almost 45K on it now and it looks like all I need is to have them install this new heater mentioned above? I was thinking about the Mishimoto cooler, so this is not effective?

Thanks!

I bought the new "heater" assembly, but havent installed it yet. I will likely install it later in the year. I will probably do some kind of engine coolant enhancement. I'm not sure if that will be a Gladiator fan and grill or that and a bigger radiator. But as long as the engine coolant is running thru that heat exchanger with the trans fluid, the fluid will not be lower than the engine coolant.

I don't know if this is 3.6 E specific but I know my trans temp is always lower than both coolant and oil temp.

My trans temp is around 204 on daily drive but i still got the new heater as it’s recommended from the dealership the 2022 JL all of them coming with the new heater so I guess we should upgrade
Yeah I hang around 211 tranny, and then 220 coolant and oil but they vary.

Yeah, I misstated that. I should have said that the trans fluid temperature is tied to the engine coolant temp. That was the idea of this design; to ensure the fluid gets up to temperature as fast as possible by heating it with the coolant.

I had machined a blockoff plate to replace the heat exchanger so there would be no heating from the coolant. But after some thought, I decided to hold off. By enhancing the engine coolant system, I might achieve what I want and retain the rapid warm up of the trans fluid.

Any writeups on changing these out?

I'm assuming it's bolts and hoses, but if anyone has lessons learned to share that would be great.

Changing what?

In 2024, I installed a Mishimoto trans cooler up front. It's a larger version of the OEM trans cooler. My guess is that it's about half again more fin area. My trans temps have been very good since. I did not remove the pre-heater down on the side of the transmission.

I have the Mishimoto on the way actually :)

I replaced the radiator with a Mishimoto last year due to a leak on the stock unit. I should have replaced both at the time... oh well.

I was eluding to the heater on the Transmission side. I plan to order a replacement in case my old one gives out at some point. I like the idea of not having a thermostat there as a point of failure.

My setup includes the Mishi radiator, trans cooler, Gladiator 850w fan, Gladiator grill, and the RPM fan controller. Everything runs in a very comfortable temp range now. If you haven't installed the fan controller, your temps won't benefit from all the hardware. I did the radiator, trans cooler, grill, and fan first. Not really a notable difference in temps from OEM. Once I put the fan controller on, it was instantly better in all situations.

Appreciate that heads up. Hadn't heard of that trick yet. I'll look into it.
