I've had a selection of the quick drains for my truck. I hated them one and all. Too slow on that thing. The drain was about 10mm thread. By the time you choked down for the valves, it was a small flow path. The Stahlbus was the slowest of the bunch. No way I'd drain it cold with the Stahlbus. Even some alumijnum drain I got from Summit was slow. I never liked the idea of a part that you must have to make the valve work.

All the QD's have some advantage and some disadvantages.

I just got my JLUR back from having Artec full aluminum skids installed. I'll look into a QD again.

LOL so I think I will keep it stock. Although I didnt think about it to begin with, I added the keep stock plug to the poll LOL. I guess when I originally thought about doing this it was simply because the oil comes out so forceful that it splatters out of my oil pan. Oh well, I guess Ill find something to put under/around the pan and carry on. Not like I havent drained oil this way for years.

I do apologize if I swayed you from making your life easier. The fumoto has been looked at by many with skids. Its a pain and messy changing oil with a skid. If you are not a rock crawler and you install the valve, you'll be fine as the pan is relatively high above the frame rails. You can add a hose and direct it directly into a 5 quart container. Just add a bit to flush the pan. My $.02

It is all good. I wasnt aware there were issues with the valves and I am grateful I know before I found out the hard way. Oil changes have never been hard or anything so its all good. Been doing it the normal way for the past 35 years why stop now lol

my last oil change was before fumoto install, what a mess! Started out well with the oil draining right through the skid access hole and then, you know how it starts to flow backwards as there is less oil…. All over the top of the skid! I kept cussing and asking myself why i havent installed the fumuto yet?!

My main reason wasn’t necessarily to make it easier - just less messy. No more splashing oil all over or fishing around the bottom of the drain pan looking for the plug. Though I will say it’s easier to change when the oil is hot. Not really an enjoyable experience with a drain plug. Couple that with now having a skid installed, I won’t have oil dripping from a dozen different places.

I’d definitely recommend installing a valve of some sort.

I have the No-spill drain on the Jeep and the last 2 Ram diesels I’ve owned.
The Jeep drain is really low profile and tucked well above the Artec aluminum skid plate.
Remove the protective cap and thread on the hose which opens the valve as it goes on.
Virtually impossible for the valve to accidentally open without threading the hose on.

Wheeled my Fumoto valve in Moab, SJ mountains, and some Texas trails, it survived. Worth the trade off to ease the oil change on my end.

I thought everyone here had the dealer change their oil at 3k intervals tho….

Like others have noted, the short hose directly into a drain pan makes clean up a snap especially once the flow reduces down to a small trickle when the oil pan is almost empty. Granted my wife's JLUR has an Artec skid to protect it, I'm not worried about damaging the Fumoto valve.

Precisely why I selected the Fumoto valve over the multi-piece ValvoMax "system". I don't want to faff about with compulsory, extraneous crap. I just want to drain the oil.

If the makers of those types of drains like the Stahlbus and others that have a separate part that "opens" the drain when screwed in, are watching, they should think about a reversible "cap" that doubles as the drain hose adapter.

With a Fumoto you could drain your oil over your living room rug without spilling a drop. That said, for those that are worried, don't sweat it, you're already acclimated to the mess, so no-harm, no-foul in continuing on with the stock drain plug. Sometimes in life you're better off not knowing what you're missing.

Until then, an actual Jeep that's sheared its Fumoto while off-roading remains as elusive as those fuzzy pictures of Bigfoot and Nessie. :)

Sorry I know this thread is about the Fumoto, but since some are interjecting about others, just wanted to make my observation/input on the Stahlbus.

I have it installed and was able to use it for the first time this past oil change. First impression, what a breeze, clean and as advertised (as I thought). Then I closed it up and added my 5 qts oil thinking everything was fully drained. When I poured the drained oil into the emptied new oil container, it did not fill back to 5 qts. It looked like about 1 more qt could go into the container. As another forum member mentioned in the post I stated about this, he stated that it will not drain all the oil.

SO on my next oil change, I will use the Stahlbus again and then when all the oil seems to have been drained, I will unscrew out the Stahlbus to see if that remaining qt drains or see if I am burning oil.

If the case is more oil comes out, I will move to the Fumoto as I unfortunately won’t be doing any wheeling any time soon.

I’ve used Fumoto before just fine on a Tacoma I’ve taken off road in Hawaii, and my ex’s Outback. I have a gold plug on this motor as a replacement for the OEM drain bolt.
