Okay, for a buyback they have to disclose to you the reason for being one. You actually have to sign the document for that. First problem with buybacks is very few banks will give you a loan on one if you are financing. Second problem is if you ever decide to trade it in, regardless of the reason for the buyback they will give you far less than the trade value for that reason. They will even tell you that's why. If it's worth $20,000 on trade they will more than likely give you $15,000. Some states have a very easy buyback program and it doesn't take much to get it done. We had a Corvette here that was a buyback from California because the drives window was too slow going up and down. Here in Missouri the vehicle has to almost blow up to get it bought back by the manufacturer. Most of the time they just give the customer an extra few thousand dollars to trade instead of buyback. California, Texas, Michigan and a few other states have very easy buyback programs. We call those can't afford buybacks. People will complain of stupid stuff to get them bought back in those states. My personal opinion of 25 years selling cars is to stay very far away from buybacks. Even if it was something simple you are buying someone else's problem and the value loss is not worth it. If you want to send me the VIN I can look it up and see what problems it had.

Dealer says no issues now and unsure what issues were.
Hopefully you realize that that's a flat out lie if he implied that he couldn't find those details.

Yes, but my engine preference is
1. diesel
2. 2.0
3. 3.6

And currently I can't get diesel or 2.0 with xr package. May go with 3.6 as it isn't bad. I just wouldn't mind trying the other 2 as I didn't find the 3.6 impressive in my 2016. But I didn't have issues either.
Just a heads-up that they never offered an EcoDiesel XR.

There's a big difference between (1) a lemon/buyback because the dealer couldn't get the parts within 30 days or whatever the inoperable time period is and (2) a lemon/buyback with an ongoing history of problems. Find out which it is.
Exactly, go to the service counter with the vin and ask for the history of repairs because you are interested in purchasing it.

I searched and I couldn't find much info. I have been researching jeeps - I had a jk 2016-2019 that I enjoyed and ready to have another one.

The best 'deal' I can find is a 23 rubicon with 7,000 miles. It is a 'buyback'. Obviously, someone had enough issues Jeep purchased it back. Warranty is remaining 3/36,000. Dealer says no issues now and unsure what issues were.

Anyone have experience purchasing a 'buyback'? Should I avoid or consider?

Thanks
Don't do it.

My YJ was a buyback <1 year after I bought it new. That is to say, it was repurchased by Jeep due to intractable engine issues.

I'd respectfully suggest walking away from the Rube, unless you want your User Name (minus 'for') to flirt with reality.

There are two types of buybacks.

Lemon, which affects the vehicle title. The title is branded as a lemon. I wouldn’t touch this with a pole.

The other is a manufacturer “voluntary” buyback which is basically part of a settlement that came out of a dispute. From what I know about these, the title isn’t necessarily branded but you will see either a manufacturer buyback or a dealer takes it into inventory on a title history report.

Given the market for Jeeps right now, very in favor of the buyer, unless there is a substantial discount, better than anything you can possibly find, I’d still lean towards no. You don’t have to. Why would you want to leave the door open to such uncertainty?

I had to lemon-law my hydro '23 4xe JLUR and I would seriously caution against getting a buyback because the records may not be accurate even if you checked.

I looked for mine a while back, and it said the reason for the buyback had been sth related to the climate controls... while that was always functioning perfectly fine and the problems I had were drivetrain related (constant "Service 4WD" messages and such). I lost 4wd, traction control, even ABS randomly. Sometimes it drovewith no issues for a couple hundred miles even!

Anyway, in case you're curious, my old one is still for sale here (they keep dropping the price, but I wouldn't buy for more than the resale value of wheels, tires, bumpers, soft top, seats and whatever else could be easily pulled from it):
https://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/vehicle/692285060

The VIN is 1C4JJXR66PW511219, and if someone has access to CARFAX (I don't) or even the Stellantis maintenance system and can pull the info, you should see what I meant by the wrong records. I can't find them right now myself, unfortunately.

Good luck with your search whichever way you decide to go, and keep us posted!
Wow, you're right nothing on the history except 'lemon.'

A Jeep dealer can enter the VIN into the CDJR warranty system and see all of the warranty claims and recalls. The system will also show if the warranty is blocked or if there is a branded title.

Some vehicles are just cursed. Will you feel comfortable a million miles from nowhere knowing you are driving a lemon? Something better will come along. Just my .02

Good info. Not the one I was considering, but similar price. I really don't want a negative experience or own a lemon, so I'll keep looking.
You’ve just answered your own question. If it wasn’t a lemon there would NOT have been a buyback. If you don’t want trouble stay away.

FWIW Look at the CarFax it will pretty much tell you why it was bought back. I would be careful if a Jeep dealer says he doesn't no why it was a buy back... My daughter wanted a Wrangler like her dads so bad and could not quite make it work. She finally found a 2018 Sport S hard top with all most all the options. It had been brought back for "steering issues" She spoke with dealer verified all service bulletins where complied with. She had them verify tire pressure and she took it for a long test drive including freeways worn pavement sudden stops etc. She called me back and said it drove just like mine...She bought it as a almost two year old Jeep for $7500 off the going price, and only 5,000 miles. She has had it for Three years + with no issues. Yes it drives like a jeep it wanders a bit specially on worn asphalt. But she loves it for what it is.
