Much of this corrosion isn't the result of a chip or scratch. It starts in random spots like door and hood edges in addition to the door, hood and tailgate hinges. It's galvanic corrosion, not rust.
Except it isn't galvanic corrosion. Where the bubbles are appearing, even on the hinges, there are no dissimilar metals. The only different metals you see is the bolts and retaining portion for this bolts at the hinges. Bottoms of the doors? Nope. Hood? Nope.
It's very likely water ingress because of shitty paint. Notwithstanding, it's like the Pinto recall I think. It's literally cheaper for them to address each one individually than to acknowledge it's an issue and fix them all. For instance, I just said screw it. Yanked my hinges and got them body coloured LineX'd. They won't bubble now. If the bottoms of my doors do it, then there will be a 6"-8" LineX strip running the length of my jeep. I'm not playing the "wait months to get it badly painted" game through the dealer. I beat the shit out of my jeep and just don't care enough for it to be perfect.

The hinge issue is debatable but, yes, random bubbles on panel edges isn't the result of dissimilar metals unless its a prep issue. But the point remains that the bubbling is not the result of a scratch or chip

I've heard the corrosion on the bottom of the door or hood that you're talking about is from particles in the prep phase of painting. That the dissimilar metal flakes are on the vehicle due to poor prep and that's why it corrodes there. ?‍♂

I agree for sure, and no one can absolutely say one thing or another. And ya, definitely not from a scratch or chip.

That would be anecdotal at best. The painting portion on an assembly line isn't in the parking lot. It's inside a fully vented paint area.

I've read that galvanic corrosion is the result of dissimilar metals creating a circuit. Water sitting at the bottom drip edge could be the catalyst as the entire hood acts as a circuit with the hinge dissimilar metals as the starting point. The bubbling from underneath at door bottom and hood bottom has been shown by many people with no paint breach (i.e. from inside out). Again, theory only, but seemingly possible that it's still galvanic corrosion.

Just a heads up to everyone who is going through this fucking awful bullshit with paying ludicrous amounts of $ on a brand new car thats literally rotting away, this is what the GM of my Jeep/Dodge dealership told me on Wednesday:

-On Monday, FCA now goes through Enterprise to give you a rental while your rust bucket is getting its shit stripped and painted. They will no longer go through the body shop or the dealership to provide you a rental, it HAS to be through Enterprise.
-It is not yet set in stone for how long you are allotted a rental vehicle, however he said "around 5 days". So no matter how many weeks it takes for your shit to get fixed (like mine), you can only have a rental for a certain amount of time, not the WHOLE time.
-The amount of $ allotted per day for your rental is also still not set in stone, however he said "around $50".
-Heres the kicker; YOU HAVE TO FUCKING PAY for the rental the entire time you are allotted to have it. And then, only afterwards, will FCA reimburse you for it. Cant afford it? Too bad, you're fucked. The jeep is your only car and you have no access to another? Too bad, you're fucked. Instead of just fucking, you know, PAYING Enterprise for your rental, they make you do it, then reimburse you.

^^^THIS IS ONLY FOR THE FCA CORRSION WARRANTY. This could vary greatly if you have your own aftermarket warranty/dealer warranty/etc.

Ive spent over $50k on this fucking thing for me to go through countless emails, hours upon hours of phone calls, being ignored and ghosted when i leave voicemails during business hours, you name it and ive been through it. If i knew this wouldve happened to me i wouldve never bought this fucking thing and had to deal with all the absolute utter nightmare of bullshit that FCA and my dealership has put me through.

Oh yeah, and when i get it back from the body shop, if they do it right the first time, i take my shit in for engine diagnostics and oil analysis because the fucking rocker arm bearings are failing at 40,000 miles.

Get a lawyer, put your foot down and stop at nothing to get your shit fixed, or just sell your shit. I hope none of you have to go through the shit they have put me through.

My 2018 has zero paint defects as you all note, except for the rear door hinges getting pumeled with rocks and chipped to the black looking primer. I fear the black look is actually the aluminum corrosion.

They are saying as of this coming Monday or what Monday? I dropped off my Jeep on 10/3 for just corrosion work and was offered a rental. Nothing said about a limit or out of pocket. We have an extra car, so I didn't take them up on it.

And, yes, I had to send mine back after going to pick it up Wednesday. There were bubbles in the paint, an uneven hinge, and a bolt with missing paint on a hinge. So be sure to look it over!!! Picked it up last night. And it looks pretty good. The inside was DUSTY!!! Guess they don't believe in protecting the inside while the doors are off. I didn't even see the dust until I was pulling out.

You think that the bottom of the doors bubbling is from current running from the hinges? That's a bit of a stretch. How much current do you think galvanic corrosion creates?

We literally don't know what's causing it. I've had my hinges completely off, I've seen the bolts that screw into the bolt keepers. Galvanic corrosion is very easy to tell, I saw nothing like it on my hinge bolts or keepers, which is literally the only place it could be happening cause, science.

Again though, no one has actually proven what it is. Hence my theory that water is getting into microscopic cracks or fissures is as likely a scenario as galvanic corrosion. Only slightly more plausible than current flowing down to the bottom of the door.

Granted, I'm an electronics tech by trade and have a bit of knowledge on current flow so that might have something to do with my Spidey senses going off when you hypothesized your theory.

Again, I have no clue what's actually causing it. It could be caused by the Covid vaccine as well I guess.

Can't tell you..shhh
I don't think the rental is an FCA thing. While they had my Jeep they gave me a week and a half on the rental. When the body shop went over they extended the rental by another two weeks to be sure. I have to take it back and they're giving me a shitty loaner because they don't have any rentals to give me, but it's still unlimited time and free. Maybe dealers have the option of being pricks about it but mine isn't taking that option.

Since there appears there are no breaks in the paint in most cases, and it sometimes takes quite some time to form and then BAM! there it is, I don't know. If Stellantis can't figure it out by now, any hypothesis is plausible. Electric "circuits" (even weak ones) are not exactly predictable.

"Microscopic" cracks in paint. Mainly because they paint the hinges on the doors.
Just a theory. Like anything else about the subject.
