What was the leaking water issue??
Completely flooded driver footwell. Also footwell behind driver. Small amount under footwell behind passenger. Passenger footwell dry. Small drips from freedom top hitting center armrest storage bin. Everything corrected but you have to dry out for about a week with carpets all left lifted otherwise pan will stay saturated. Positive is pan looks to have a clear rock solid epoxy type sealer over the metal.

Is very hard to know for sure unless you actually lift the carpet. As can feel completely dry on top but is still fully saturated below. Is a very extensive list as shown. So get a leak specialist vs some random FCA tech. Is a very common problem on the JK. Someone we know asked me if the JL also had this problem as she wants to sell her JK to get rid of this problem. She has massive footwell flooding every time it rains. Unfortunately I had to tell her. Youtube has a bunch of vids on this as well.

As noted all these stupid QC issues are a complete PITA but the JL is such a capable vehicle it still makes it worthwhile for us. This thing really is a rock crawling beast when pushed. As driving on smooth tarmac is child’s play. The JL craves roads that are rough gravel with huge potholes and washboard. Medium sized rocks and small boulders just coming into its element.

I think i will try to go check some used JLs out at car lots and check the hinges. I will also try to check JLs i come across in parking lots. Some of these bubbles in this thread would be easy to notice as casually walk by.

Is this something that is happening to 100% of the JL population?? Has anyone owned a JL for a couple years that does not have the bubbles on the hinges??

i've had 4 wranglers over the years and have not notice abnormal corrosion on my hinges. just normal as would be expected on any vehicle, especially those driven in the northern salt belt.

i do like to wax my jeeps at least twice a year; i also wash them even in the winter if they are coated with salt. these two things go a long way towards slowing down the aging process.

underneath is a different story. plenty of stuff in the unpainted areas gets surface corrosion within the first year.

Just noticed this was happening on my driver side door. Nothing around the hinges yet. 2020 Rubicon. Will be bringing it to the dealer this week to see what they suggest.

I took mine to the body shop that the dealer referred me to go today. The person who did the inspection at the body shop showed me photos of other wranglers he had worked on in the past 3 years. There were at least 60 other wranglers that he showed me on his computer.

He stated that unless FCA changes their painting process, it was his opinion that the Wrangler would continue to have this issue.

How has there not been a Class Action suit against FCA? This issue causes depreciation to all our vehicles. The repaint is going to appear on the Carfax and cause us to loose money on the resale value of the vehicle.

I'm wondering why some have paint issues and some don't . If you could ask him I'd appreciate it and get back with me . Thanks

In Europe we also have the problem around the hinges of the doors, but not the hood because it is different from yours because here it is in steel, but the hinges are in aluminum so ...

The front of the hood on my 2018 is bubbling up pretty badly. I am going to call the dealership to see if it is under warranty (doubt it)

I went back and forth a lot. That’s what I originally wanted to do. Short answer is fluid film was more of a fool proof way to do it for me, whereas if I painted the bare metal and the aluminum wasn’t clean, which is really hard to do, it wouldn’t help this issue. Fluid film stops corrosion on contact, and it is extremely hard to get off especially if it isn’t exposed to any elements. I’ve had it on my underside of my truck through two winters in PA, it held up great. I know there’s epoxy that is meant for this...
I’m sure there’s a few ways to doing this, and I’m a CPA, I have no knowledge of this other than the 10 or so hours I’ve researched how to prevent aluminum from corrosion lol I’m always open to suggestions if you think my method won’t work!
However I haven’t seen anyone else try this so I figured it’s worth a shot
It's been a few months, how's it holding up? Im thinking about doing the same.
i'm nervous that once you 'break the seal' it might speed up the corrosion. So far I have it on 1 hinge. Also would think applying fluid film would stop current corrosion? or once it starts to corrode it keeps going...

For all those that have this QC problem, have FCA perform this as a warranty repair asap. Refer to this thread and the Pacifica thread below. Corrosion is a very well known problem and well documented as per the TSB. The body shop owner that FCA approved do my warranty repair noted that the Pacifica corrosion is even worse and more prevalent than the Wrangler. There are over 20 different model FCA vehicles listed in their TSB.

Unfortunately if you have one of these vehicles you can expect corrosion as the model years extend all the way to current for many listed including the Wrangler. Try to get a lifetime warranty from the body shop and make sure they follow aluminum clean room protocols including epoxy coating under as per the TSB. And yes expect the value of your Wrangler to decrease accordingly.

If you have no corrosion yet keep your fingers tightly crossed as they do seem to appear eventually as some report. Often after the warranty expires so FCA can deny the claim. It is what it is. This is not only a Jeep thing but a FCA thing. Apparently certain other manufacturers have similar corrosion issues as well. But maybe not as bad.

Hey it’s been about 2 weeks, so far so good. I’m actually waiting to hear back from fca about a warranty claim I submitted unrelated to this involving a metal stamping issue on my one door. It has a few creases at the bottom.

from everything I’ve researched, fluid film should pause corrosion that’s already taken place. I sprayed a bunch on the bare metal, and I reapplied once after I installed my
Hinges on the bare metal that’s surrounding the hinge that fca didn’t paint.... some people have this issue. I did however send in my oem hinges to be power coated. I don’t like the rustoleum finish on the set I purchased and have currently installed. Sandblasting and power coating the oem hinges should at least protect them for the life of the vehicle. It’ll be a different story depending on if the actual door panel corrodes around the hinges or not, but hopefully the fluid film won’t allow that.

Thank you! Does this TSB act as a recall? I called my dealership and since my 2018 has 39000 miles, they said I was out of warranty and there is nothing they can do.

A TSB is merely a recommended procedure for repair and would not act as a recall.
