Get ready guys, this is a good one. Took my Jeep into get the hood and doors painted 4 week ago. Third party painted it, cringed at this fact when they told me. Was very adamant about removing and correctly painting the door under the hinges, removing the handles and the rubber trim in the windows. You can already see where this is going.... So I picked it up today and voila:

As you can see, some assembly is still required, the inner side of the passenger door is bare aluminum, handles have paint ridges cause they weren't removed, hood is also metal on the inside, has dried drops and imperfections on the latches, they didn't remove the rubber trim so it also has new paint line visible.

In short pictures speak for themselves. No worries @JeepCares, already have a case number.

My fear exactly. I may cancel my appointment for now as mine are barely noticeable and I doubt they will repair this to my satisfaction.
I'd rather have bubbles then these cobbled up messes I see . I hate to say if mine starts it's gone !

Yeah think carefully on that.

Yep once you allow them to touch the original paint - it will never be the same as from factory. We had corrosion bubbles on one hood hinge and a tiny spot adjacent on the hood. Dealer outsourced to a body shop. Apparently because FCA pays so minimal - it is extremely hard to get professional workmanship.

Most body shops do not follow the FCA TSB protocols. So it makes sense the corrosion problem will come back. As well they may simply do a crap job. We brought it back because the paint tech failed to do a proper mask and left bridging drips. This was re-sprayed and corrected - but then they left micro scratches and a bubbled decal. So back it went for a complete re-clear + another set of decals - but this time they hired a separate decal specialist. Finally the job got done properly.

They actually did properly epoxy prime the hood under the hinges + replaced both hinges even though only one was affected. They showed me pics. As well repainted the entire hood and screws. But will it come back - who knows? But the body shop owner gave me a personal guarantee their work has a lifetime warranty + the dealer confirmed this. They were very apologetic and wanted a chance to make it right. Which was positive. They did also use alum clean room protocols. Which also was positive.

So bottom line is the corrosion repair is simply a crapshoot for any JL owner - but stay on top of it yourself - because the dealer will not. Once they sub out the work - they try to wash their hands and leave you to deal with the body shop - and not them. Saves them a lot of time and money - while you take that burden. Is a BS approach but it is what it is.

Anyways now have to deal with a water leak ponding into the driver footwell - which is probs coming in from unsealed body panel joints underneath the ext cowling. Great. More Fun times with crap FCA QC. Love the JL for its winter prowess - but the design flaws and QC make you wonder which idiot was in charge of these departments.

I could take it to a dealer that has a body shop but we had a Grand Caravan which also had a corrosion issue on the hood. They did the repair and FCA paid for a new hood.

My concern is I wash my vehicle's weekly and on the van some of the clear coat peeled off when washing it months after they painted it. You already know what the dealer said when I brought it back to them, Its been two months, you used to much pressure . . . . its your fault.

This whole experience has been very deflating. We already had our clutch replaced due to a recall now the rust issues on a new vehicle should not be an issue. We love our Jeep but its like they are trying to make us hate it so we don't buy another one.

If someone asked me about my ownership experience and I told them about these issues I can pretty much guarantee they wouldn't buy one that's for sure

My gosh - even Earl Scheib would be ashamed of that pitiful quality....the fix is worse than the problem.
Hell, back in the early 1980's, I had my first car, repainted at Earl Shieb's, $99 Special, and they did a better job than that.

I just got my Red 2018 back yesterday. The dealership sent it to Service King, Kingwood Texas. I have to say, they did a great job. They stripped, primered, and repainted the entire hood, because of one corroded hinge. It looks like it just rolled out of the factory. Lets see if it resurfaces again.

I'm honestly bummed they even told me to go talk it up with the body shop myself. Didn't even sign release papers and will not sign them until this is fixed. Hell today I found the new clear chipping on the passenger side close to the mirror, bad masking peel I assume. If this shop doesn't fix this I hope Jeep gives them hell. They just be ripping off loyal Jeep customers at the brands expense.

If this goes on, might even get my insurance company involved, this is basically destroying a car worked my ass of to pay.

Not too likely. I probably would have if I felt that they were working on a solution. I refuse to accept “it’s a Jeep thing” for this.
I understand ! If mine blisters it's gone and I won't purchase another one to many headaches not worth it .

Are the paint issues on the doors/hinges more common on certain year JL’s?

So far, all JL's. FCA has not properly assembled them.
1. Paint and primer the damn metal, under the hinges.
2. Or, Use aluminum hinges
3. Use Stainless Steel bolts, on hinges.

Just how hard is it to properly do your job, FCA???

Hey, @JeepCares , maybe you can forward this post to FCA. And, no, I will not private message you about this. All the world needs to know how "Shitty" FCA has designed these hinge areas.

I agree that this will be an ongoing issue until they change the process and/or materials. And to answer the original question, it would be too early to tell if it was more common on certain years. I took delivery August 9, 2018 (manufacture date July 2018) and noticed small bubbling October 2020, a little over 2 years into ownership. Some people are seeing the bubbles after only 6 months. I'm guessing it's going to be at least two more years before we're able to see trends.
