I asked the dealer to respond to this question. We'll see if I get an answer. For me, the difference between a 3500 pound and a 5000 pound rating is the ability to comfortably rent a U-Haul enclosed 6'x12' trailer or haul my paperweight classic car, too. I guess this is why people opt for the Gladiator, but the extra truck bed length makes it a no-go for one of my household drivers. I suppose we could get a Grand Cherokee, which tows 6200 pounds, but where is the fun in that?
I'm trying to picture a driver that I'd trust to drive a JLU but not a JT? No go how? Someone loses all depth perception after a few extra feet? How do they not hit things when driving at speed if that's the case?

Yes it does, but notice the little "4" next to the 5000. Somewhere there is a note that explains what that "4" means. It could mean the 392, could mean the Rubicon with 4.10 gears... I wonder if towing 5000 pounds with my Rubicon with a 6-speed manual transmission will affect the clutch??? ;)

No look at the next chart, which shows both the 2.0 and 3.6 support 5,000 lbs.

What makes you think the chart shows that both the 2.0 and 3.6 support 5k pounds? "Up to" very much implies that not all of them do.

The "Contact dealer for details" part is complete BS since dealers don't know.

Because the chart says so,, Maximum GTW is 5,000 lbs for 2.0L Rubicon and 3.6l Rubicon:

Now the question is, does anyone have a door jamb sticker with a GCWR of 9,950-10,300lbs? If yes, then all they need is the proper hitch to LEGALLY tow 5k lbs.

Secondary issue is frontal area. Most RV Trailers exceed the 40 sq. ft. in dimension IF you calculate the raw number (HXW). However, I have read many say that the frontal area is the RV number less the frontal area of the tow vehicle ( the total area in. square feet that a. moving vehicle and. trailer exposes to air. resistance.). So I assume the calculation could be RV Frontal Area (x) minus the wrangler blocking area (y) = total frontal area. X-Y = Z (max?). So what is the Wrangler number?

If your Jeep isn't commercial, nobody is ever weighing your trailer. Even if you did fall under a dot inspection, they aren't measuring frontal area of your trailer as manual recommendations aren't enforceable. If you are under the GCWR and your hitch is rated properly you're good to go on your merry way. That recommendation is there so that when your Jeep overheats pulling a 2,000lb trailer that is shaped like a giant parachute Jeep can point at your frontal area compared to the manual.

I hope your correct. I did a rough measurement of my JL, and it's 36 ft. sq. frontal area. That exceeds the 30 sq. ft. frontal area for a 2021 model year.

Jeep shows the 2024 towing an airstream in its ads, and I see that a 16' Airstream Bambi has a front towing area of about 69 sq. feet, which exceeds the 40 foot limit unless you can subtract the JL's frontal area.

I find it strange that the JL needs the full float for 5000lbs, but even the wimpiest spec of the heavier JT is rated at 4500lbs.
