How often are those of you with 2.0 engines topping off the coolant?
Thanks for putting this topic out here. I noticed the radiator fan kicking in with 75F weather, which seemed odd. I checked the black capped coolant reservoir on the driver's side, and it was low so I filled it back within normal range.

Vehicle age and wear: 9 months, 8K miles
Looks like I've got a new maintenance item to keep an eye on. Thank you!

For coolant, I gave them my VIN and they gave me 68163849AB Antifreeze (pre-diluted MS-12106). That one reservoir near the driver covers all the coolant circuits? (No eTorque here.)

Low coolant levels in the rear/opaque tank are common it seems. So what’s going on? Do we all have leaks or is coolant in this system a consumable in some way? I looked pretty carefully and don’t see evidence of a leak—no pink trails or puddles anywhere. Not a big deal to check and top off, I suppose, but if there is a leak it would be better to fix it.
I wonder if it was at Full when I got it new, never checked it until now. Maybe they are coming undefiled from the factory. Anyway I know it's at Full now so if it drops again I'll know.

Coolant should not be consumed, it’s not like oil where a small amount is inevitably lost through the piston rings.

I would not be concerned to top off coolant once, either after a new vehicle is built or the cooling system has been drained. Because some air may have been burped out.

Repeated addition means there’s a leak.
Exactly. It’s a closed system.

22 JLU with 1600miles.
Sitting for 18 hours.
Checked and the coolant is showing at the top of the add line on the dipstick.

Maybe they are coming from factory this way.

Maybe so but I think they are losing coolant as they drive too. I’ve now filled mine twice—the first time at about 7000 miles and the second at about 17000. About 12 ounces each time.

While you’re under the hood checking coolant check the other fluids too. My power steering pump res. was completely empty.
Had the steering box replaced about 3,000 ago. No leaks just a shitty service dept.
exact same thing happened to me. I griped at the service manager and they gave me the PS fluid to top it back off.

I want to know why they made it opaque. Hell, my 3.6 is 'normal' - I can see right through it. The wife's 2.0L? Nope!
It's because the turbo is right next to it, thus a different plastic to try to make it last longer with the heat cycles. If they last 5 years I'll be surprised.

As for adding coolant, mine took a gallon a while back because someone at the factory decided not to tighten the two bolts on the lower radiator hose housing (the housing that attaches to the water pump).

Mine is low every time I check it. No sign of leakage anywhere. Where is it going?
