10k is good. I have a smittybilt, and even tho that brand gets a bad rap, it has been reliable for me. I got it almost 50% off, so it was a no brainer at the time. If I were in the market for a winch right now, I'd do Badlands all day.

Badlands is 12000 , thats what i have been thinking 12K might be an overkill..

Yes, I should have specified, while 10k is plenty, I'd do the 12k Badlands all day. I like overkill. Besides, something to consider is that winches tend to be used to recover other vehicles just as much if not more than they're used for self recovery. You never know when you need to pull that 2500 out of a ditch (which I did about a month ago)

I picked up a badlands today for 450. Had a 25% off code they texted me. So sign up for that and wait. Or get the membership which is 30 bucks a year and it goes on sale at least 100 bucks evey other month.

I’m running the badlands winch. I have had about 5 recoveries in the last year and it has done a great job.

Sunday it pulled me out of a mud hole that went half way up my doors. It was solid

I’ve got a Smittybilt that’s worked just fine. I’d shop for the best deal I could find on a known brand. There’s some funky stuff coming out of China, but most of the winches just work-heck even the base Warns are Chinese these days.

For the most part, the difference in a 10k and 12k is going to be gearing, trading slower line speed for additional torque.

I run the Superwinch SX10SR, and have been happy with it. I personally felt the quality was better than the Apex when comparing them in person.

That said, HF has the Apex on sale for $500 for "Spring Black Friday" right now.

I personally wouldn't do RR or RC. I would consider Smittybilt, I thought it looked like a quality product in person.

Everything in this range is made in China.

I'm not saying there's a bad winch brand. I don't know. I've had two Warn winches, and I like them. That said, one of them I bought used from a guy for about 1/2 retail (unused other than sun fade on the plastic), the other - essentially I also bought used (it looked like it had never been used as well), but it came on the used Wrangler I bought. If I were going to buy another one, I'd probably go with a Warn because it's what I know, and have used it several times during the Jeep Jamboree I attended.

Additionally, if I were got get another one - I'd probably get a Warn 12k. The exterior dimensions of the winch itself is the same as the 10k (same casing), and if I ever decide that I want to put it in a heavier vehicle it's a 1 and done purchase for the rest of my off-road hobby enjoying life.

My friend has a smittybuilt, it's worked well for him. In fact, I don't know anyone who has a winch who doesn't like the one they bought.

13k, wireless remote has great range and seems very reliable. You can get them for $369 when they have a sale which is often. The control box mount sucks but easy to modify up one.

One thing to consider: the pull rating is based on the first wrap of cable on the winch - basically with the whole cable extended. However, you lose about 1,200 - 1,500 per layer of cable staying on the drum. so if you want to winch someone at 20 feet from the obstacle, you may actually have only a fraction of the capacity. This is why I went with a 12,000lb Badland Apex. This is the chart for Warn Zeon 12S. As you can see, pulling drops to 7,324 lb when you have 4 layers of cable on the drum.

I like Warn, have them on both my Jeeps. always work great and you know you will be able to get parts 10-20-30 years down the line. Plus something about Jeep and Warn just go together, two icons.

Once you make the decision which one to get, another important factor that keeps your winch to work when you need it is maintenance.

Cover it when its not in use. Dry run it every once a while (especially before you go offroad). Make sure all electrical connections are good. Keep the synthetic line clean and out the element etc..

My SB X20 has been reliable since 2019.
12K is nice to have but 10K works just fine. I have the 10K version and it works for me. If I need more, I use a snatch black to double the pull.
