Remember, that the snorkel is not just about water fording depth, it moves fresh air intake up to get it into clean colder air which improves engine performance.
That's exactly what I got mine for on my JK. That and it was half price on Craigslist.

I agree, but I wasn't making a 1:1 comparison, but the intent of all of the aftermarket intakes and snorkels is to provide cooler cleaner air to the engine. Just providing some information about how cooler denser air impacts engines.

How tall is the snorkel in order to reach this colder air? From what I read, you lose an average of 3.5 degrees Fahrenheit for every 1000 feet of elevation you gain. Snorkels are what? 5 feet high at most? Using math - 3.5 degrees over 1000' is .0035 degrees per foot - times 5 is - a drop of 0.0175 degrees at the top of the snorkel.

Crap, but the air is thinner up there. So less oxygen. More math...

So do you intend to waterproof every electrical connection? Every electrical box? Spark plugs? Most people have no idea what it takes to waterproof an engine compartment. Especially a modern, computerized vehicle.
Not to mention differential breathers, there is a whole bunch of work just to get them better at water fording. Most will never see water over the axle though.

It doesn't have to be tall, just outside of the engine bay. I'd guess that the air temp at the roof line is always going to be a bit cooler than the air temp under the hood. Any performance gains would likely be negligible though.

Also, if you live/travel is dry/dusty areas then a snorkel can help get cleaner air to the engine if you're traveling in a convoy by raising the intake above (or at least higher in) the dust cloud. This is as much a reason for snorkels on true expedition rigs as water fording.

As for the Mopar snorkel and the JL's folding windshield, the Mopar snorkel appears to be, or be based on, the AEV snorkel, which mounts outboard of the side of the windshield frame on a JK. Assuming it didn't have a support bracket mounted to the windshield frame, you might could very well still fold the windshield on a JL with the Mopar snorkel in place. Though the inability to fold the windshield could also be a trade-off for running a snorkel on the JL.

Cold or cooler air contains more oxygen than hot air which improves the way the fuel burns. So yes they improve performance....
I have no technical knowledge of this, but beware of any "expert source" that may have something to gain.

raised air intake is also for cleaner air here in aus we have a lot of dusty roads & air filter service life is extended by a considerable margin with a snorkel

Air from outside the engine compartment is certainly cooler than the air inside the engine compartment.

You are right, there may have been some bias associated with that article, but snorkels are misunderstood and he knows more about them than I do. I was just adding information that supports the argument that snorkels are not just about fording, they are truly about providing cleaner colder air to the motor.

Wow, this snorkel reduces HP by 30%? If true, I doubt many people would install one.
