Do the research..............Its not panic. Lithium batteries do NOT extinguish easily. These batteries have been in vehicles for over a decade, and we still do not have a way to put them out quickly.

It takes about 150lbs of Class D Copper extinishing agent to put out 5 lbs of Lithium!
Class D is meant to extinguish metal fires. Lithium ion batteries do not contain lithium metal.

Tesla recommends plain water to extinguish fires in batteries in its cars. Note that the fire is extinguished quickly; the continued application of water is to manage the heat in the battery to prevent re-ignition. See page 23 in:

https://www.tesla.com/sites/default/files/downloads/Model_3_Emergency_Response_Guide_en.pdf

Again, these fires are quite rare given the number of Teslas out on the road (and the number of Li-Ion batteries in general).

I could tell you, but then....
Real world mpg. say 200 miles or so at 65 mph with no big hills?
On a full tank and full charge, 75% interstate driving, best I did was 397 total miles. Worked for me. My daily commute is right at 100 miles, so 25% of that being electric helps me in the long run too. One of the things I've found is that you don't notice the weight of the vehicle. The balance is great and this thing is really nimble. Hard to believe that it weighed as much as my Raptor. I agree it's not for everyone, but so far it has exceeded my expectations in every way.

You are correct the latest Tesla Model 3 is LI-ion..........

Teslas Model 3 guide ...... in section 6, There are many safe guards in place after the fire is initally extinguished. As noted in guide in will take 3K-8K gallons of water to extinguish (cool down)......that is usually two fire tankers. Depending on location, vehicle may need to be safely transportated to a safe designated area, where it will be monitored for at least 24hrs. After it is verified, with thermal imagery camera or infrared, it can be transported to the appropriate recycler.......Its a long costly process.....

NOTE: Lithium-ion batteries do NOT require Class D extinguisher, however Lithium batteries do.

From personal experience when it's below 23 degrees Fahrenheit, the battery basically just evaporates, it really doesn't make much sense running on pure electricity, the 4xe displays FORM, or Electric unavailable etc.

The 4xe tend to keep the ICE on all the time, and then uses both the ICE and battery to power the Wrangler, usually sipping the battery mostly, then short bursts of power if it's demanded. Some people like it when the 4xe behaving like this, I am one such person, it would be nice to have a 4th button to keep it like this at times.

When in FORM, the Hybrid pages will show at times that it is only using the battery, even though the ICE is on.

Again I am not sure why anyone would want to run on pure battery when the range is limited at these temps.

For me, I do not have a charger so I pay for electricity, after 3 months I got a feel for the 4xe, and now I get away with mostly free electricity.

So when it's 0 degrees out and I am only getting 15 miles range, it's a waste of time charging up often and it would also be costly.

The bottom line is this is a PHEV, and not an EV, expecting it to run purely on battery the majority of the time is not possible, that ICE needs to fire up.

I am 2/3 electric and 1/3 ICE mileage, I live in Toronto, so January and February are very cold here, but I still ride my bicycle in -20C on snow cover roads, and drive around with the Sky one touch open in -10C temps in pure silence of the electric motors of the 4xe. At night you can hear the Falken MT biting the snow, it's amazing. I miss the cold and the snow, but now I am getting the 40km range of the 4xe.

Can't wait until next winter.
I completely agree... and want that 4th button.

  • I'll chime in. It's my 3rd wrangler. I had a 2006 TJD and then a 2016 2-Dr Sahara.
  • I was hesitant to switch to a 4-Dr, but after doing some trails here in Southern California last weekend, I'm more than sold for the offroad capabilities - particularly the select speed system. But the stock tires on the Sahara SUCK.
  • Yeah it was fun to have an actual throttle cable in the TJ, but the electric motor is great at just giving the right amount of power without worrying about rev-ups.
  • I get free charging at work
  • I get essentially free charging at home due to a massive solar system that we have
  • Bragging rights - it's so much fun to pull up to a charging parking spot somewhere and people just be dumbfounded that they offer a PHEV wrangler now.
  • I get around 45 mpg for my commuting. It's 56 miles each way. I usually use hybrid mode and the ACC system, which seems to default to using the ICE and the electric motor about equally.
  • The tax credit will be nice to claim on this year's taxes.
  • As so many others mentioned, the acceleration at stoplights is stupid fast.
    • Just as the electric motor is tapering off, the lag from the turbo is over, so turbo lag hasn't been a critique of mine on this powertrain.
  • Absolute silence for driving around town (other than the soft top and wheel noise and the loud music that I play).

I was really on the fence about getting this new rig, but I have absolutely love it and probably won't purchase an exclusive ICE powertrain vehicle again.

25-28 mpg for the first 50 until the battery is shot, then 21 after that.
Or- 22 miles or so with no fuel and the next 178 or so at 21-22 mpg.
Higher speed does a number especially on flat ground - I averaged 17.5 on a longish trip but was doing 80 the whole way.
This is a really helpful breakdown, thanks. Waiting for mine to be built.

This topic has been beaten to death - I’m surprised there hasn’t been a sticky version of it.

In short, buy the vehicle that best fits your situation and your finances. It’s a niche vehicle, but fits some folks’ lives perfectly.

Uhmm, no. It's a major issue affecting a great many people where temps are regularly below 30 degrees Fahrenheit. Even when they follow the suggestions in the manual, the temp won't rise and stay high enough, long enough to reset it. It is a design issue or more like design flaw since other manufacturer's PHEVs are not getting locked out of EV mode for weeks like the Wrangler 4XE owners are.

I truly hope they fix these issues because it's a great vehicle.

And there is a thread about it on THIS forum (right HERE) with several people describing exactly what I said is happening.
I heard it is the biggest issue ever in the history of the world of all time affecting this Jeep. I also heard that the most people ever in history are being affected by this than any other vehicle that has ever been affected by any problems ever

No need to be a Richard Cranium here. My response that you quoted was to your trying to imply it was a rare thing and not anything to be concerned about when it is in fact a widespread problem in areas that get below 30 degrees.

But the stock tires on the Sahara SUCK.
Grab some Rubicon takeoffs

I like the Sahara rims, but the tire really suck, they should have put on some better looking tires

I got some Gladiator Falken MTs for the snow, but I'm thinking to run them all year.

" Cool factor - My wife and I pulled into valet parking at a fancy restaurant. At the end of the night, the valet brought out my 4xe and told me it was the favorite car he drove that night. And this was a restaurant with Ferraris and Bentleys parked up front "

I'm not sure that is a pro. I NEVER want to hear a valet tell me that my car was the favorite one they drove tonight (queue Ferris Bueller scene), lol.
I get what you’re saying but I wouldn’t be too concerned over a valet complementing your brand new PHEV Wrangler. I’ve found that your average Joe has no idea they even exist yet.

I bought a Jeep first and decided to get the Hybrid while I was at it. I understand the reduced functionality in the winter. It's a little disappointing but in no way will it make me get rid of this Jeep. You can still function in Hybrid, just not in only-electric. Can I still run my Jeep in the winter? Yes. Was I able to start the Jeep that was not plugged in all night at -28 Celcius in the morning? Yes. Is it a major issue? Nah.

I'm getting older and find that nowadays everything is a big panic, everything is drama. You know, oh my god, my left blinker didn't work, I'm gonna post about it all over the internet.
I would just change the damn lightbulb, but maybe i am getting old and grumpy. ;-)

Sorry OP, I got sucked in again. There are several good points regarding your original question as to why to get a 4xe. (One more, so I stay somewhat on point, if you like attention, get the 4xe. I have people asking me at gas stations, car washes, the mall parking lots etc. why my Jeep has a Green license plate.) If you decide to get one, have fun. It's a blast! :)

Same. I don't have my 4xE yet, but I have a Volvo S60 T8 plug-in with only 20 electric miles but it puts out 400HP and 472lb-tq. And getting on it, I love being in all-electric. Granted this does way better when not on electricity (30+mpg on the highway) and I'm generally getting 60mpg per day. But I would never want to go back to an all ICE vehicle. It's a plug-in or give me all-electric. Even though I grew up on big V8's. I do love electric and as I'm getting older I like the quiet. Also easier to speed and go fast without attracting cops attention.

that seems like the battery is used only in the EV mode ? ? is that true.
So the 4XE does not act like a regular hybrid (think Prius, Rav4 etc.) after the initial charge runs out?
I used to own a Honda Insight hybrid and the battery gets trickle charged by just driving it and regenerative breaking etc.. then that battery power is used in accelerating through some motor. If the 4xe doesn't do that, then its not a hybrid at all in a true sense .. its just a giant battery pack that will run out after 25 miles.
