Class D is meant to extinguish metal fires. Lithium ion batteries do not contain lithium metal.OINC
Do the research..............Its not panic. Lithium batteries do NOT extinguish easily. These batteries have been in vehicles for over a decade, and we still do not have a way to put them out quickly.
It takes about 150lbs of Class D Copper extinishing agent to put out 5 lbs of Lithium!
Tesla recommends plain water to extinguish fires in batteries in its cars. Note that the fire is extinguished quickly; the continued application of water is to manage the heat in the battery to prevent re-ignition. See page 23 in:
https://www.tesla.com/sites/default/files/downloads/Model_3_Emergency_Response_Guide_en.pdf
Again, these fires are quite rare given the number of Teslas out on the road (and the number of Li-Ion batteries in general).
