I drive a 2020 Sahara JLU and have about 75,000 trouble free and happy kilometers. My Jeep is a daily driver and weekend overlander - I drop and pickup my kids from school everyday which runs me about 20kms in the morning and 20kms in the afternoon. (That's out and back home 10+10km). Every week grocery runs are another 30kms and most other errands even out to under 50kms a month.

I was wondering if 4xe is a better Jeep for my situation as I potentially can cover 970kms of local driving per month in completely electric mode.

At 7kmpl (16.5mpg) that's about 140 liters and roughly $300 in commute fuel cost per month. Not including any weekend trips.

With gas prices getting record high here in Vancouver Metro Area, BC - Canada (Currently $2.05 per liter CAD) we were seriously giving a thought to trade in our beloved "Gray Wolf" and get a 4xe JLU.

There are a bunch of unknowns that I am still unclear about and would like opinion and ground truth from existing 4xe owners
  1. I am likely going to retain the same setup (35s on mild 1.5" lift). If I end up opting for a 4xe Rubicon instead of a Willys, will I be able to just plop 35s without needing to lift?
  2. What is the average fuel mileage (in mpg) on a 4xe when you are on very long trips and ev-battery is 0%? Do you still get around 20mpg at that situation?
  3. What is the reduction in EV range if you move from 33s to 35s (315/70/17)
Your replies, opinions and thoughts are much appreciated !

Looking to clone this setup over to a 4xe. Sad to see "Sting Gray" go away as color option.. will be ok to settle for "Anvil" or "Granite"

1. Yes
2. As ever, it depends. If you're driving across Kansas at 70 mph into a headwind, it's going to be a lot worse than if you're driving 55 with no wind. Overall, our '21 4xe Rubicon maintains about 3-10 mpg better than our '15 JKU Rubicon on the same route.
3. Sadly, I can't answer this question yet.?

Depending on your electric rates you sound like a prime user for the 4xe. You’ll want a level 2 charger pretty quick though as level 1 will take 12 hours to recharge a depleted battery

I can't answer your specific questions, but I would say this whatever hit you may take MPG wise on the odd long trip, you will well and make up for it with the bulk of your kms being on cheap electric daily kms. Don't know your rates, but a full charge is about 14kWh.

I was getting about 15mpg daily driving JKs and a JL, which comes up to about $400-$450CAD a month at Costco, I got about 320km per tank mostly city driving.

The odd long distance trips I did, I got about low 20s mpg, so over 500km a tank usually going 120-160kmph, I haven't done any long distance with the 4xe.

I don't pay for for electricity for the most part so I'm saving a ? load of $, even if I paid I would probably max at $100 per month using expensive public chargers, so I would still be saving $300+ per month.

Short city trips in 5C+ temps aim for 25-30km, longer 50kmph trips you can squeeze out about 40km per charge. Not sure about what 35s would do to your range, but I replaced my stock Sahara with 33s MT and I don't notice a difference in range.

FWIW you will go into FORM mode at some point in the winter and be forced to burn some fuel. Mine used to stay in FORM once this happened but seems to have changed a bit since a software flash, but still a consideration.

On the flip side, I'm currently at 1200 miles on my latest tank of gas with a third of a tank left.

I'm still on OEM tires, but the posts I've read say 35's have little to no impact on gas mileage.

2021 Rubi 4xe with 25k miles.

Also keep in mind that the Gov is working on ways to tax EV to recoup the money they lose on gas taxes in the next few years.

Yeah if we factor that, icbc insurance hikes and BC Hydro moving to time of use rate plans in 2024 - it really complicates the break even calculation.

Jeep increasing it's pricing to unobtainium levels is not helping the break even plan either. I have to get a used 4xe at very good deal (this avoids PST for used cars 8k saving)... That's the only viable path. Buying new doesn't make sense at all

$83,500 CAD for a well speced new 2023 Rubicon 4xe
This includes 10% PST and 5% GST

Similar spec used 2022 Rubicon 4xe was $72,650 , no PST for pre owned PHEVs (7-8k saving).

How long do you have to own that thing to break even on fuel? I do realize it has more hp/tq but it also weighs a lot more.

I think the Rubicon trim cost more than the gas equivalent when equipped the same.

However the Sahara is a few hundred dollars difference, therefore I'm saving close to $5,000 a year not buying gas.

MSRP 63k for my Sahara 4xe the only options are the Sky One-Touch, paint, proximity, cold weather. I got 5% off MSRP, zero government grease.

My somewhat less equipped 2018 Sahara, was 58k, like no LED etc. I got 15% off MSRP.

On trade 3 years later I got 44k on trade.

The Canadian government has ways to penalize us for using gas, carbon taxes with increases every April fool's day, for the foreseeable future, then they want to put an end to oil production etc.

Simply put fully charged battery saves me about $8CAD not buying gas.
