An update on my Death Wobble. I finally took my 2018 JL Sahara into the dealership. The service manager made it sounds like it was almost impossible to diagnose the death wobble. However, he had experienced it himself in another Jeep and ask a tech to look at it.

The tech replaced the steering damper (that was replaced in the recall). He said they had a few people come in after the recall-fix complaining of a worse “shimmy” after the fix. So, I’m not sure if its a different type of steering damper they put it in or just a replacement.

The tech also mentioned (like TEXGOAT said above) that the damper needs to be bled and said it is a few technical steps to do that (implying that it may not have been done when the damper was originally replaced).

Anyhow, the good news is that my Jeep feels much more “tight” when hitting bumps and a few of the normal spots that would trigger the wobble haven’t triggered it yet. So, so far so good.

If other folks are having this issue you may want to try what TEXGOAT said above. Likewise, you may see if they will replace the damper and make sure they bleed it properly.

Just curious, does the "so far, so good" still stand or has the DW resurfaced?

Thanks.

Hi Pete. It lasted about two weeks and then slowly reverted back to the death wobble. I'd experience it multiple times a day on the highway. I'm glad you asked, though, because I figured it out (at least on my Jeep).

So, I do have the V41. That solved it temporarily and then it reverted back to the DW quickly. I then decided to switch away from the factory installed tires. Problem solved. I haven't experienced it once since I switched tires (4 months).

My working theory is that my Wrangler is prone to the Death Wobble. If there are issues with the tires, alignment, wear (not sure which) then it can induce the wobble when I hit a bump. So, if anyone out there is experiencing the issue and you are close to a tire replacement, your world may get a lot better once you change tires.

Much appreciated on the quick response and insight. I'm in a similar boat, but this sounds promising.

Thanks.

No problem. I know first-hand how the death wobble sucks the fun out of owning a Jeep. BTW, I went with BF Goodrich All Terrain A/T's. They had a decent snow rating, since I live in the mountains. In my experience they are just OK for deep snow, but it seems to have solved my death wobble.

Good luck! Hope you solve it.
