I use the Topsy brackets with 4 eye bolts in the ceiling of my garage. 3 ratchet straps (one for each rear corner plus one looped through the front) to lift the top. Easy, takes me about 30 minutes to do the top and doors by myself. Just have to be careful and go slow when lowering it back on by releasing the straps a little bit each while keeping one hand under the top to keep it from free falling.
Thanks for validating what I’m thinking in reality. I think you make more sense with 3 straps instead of 4 as I originally thought I would do. I didn’t realize you actually let out the straps though. I thought you would lift the hard top a bit from hanging position, undo the hook mechanism, and lower it to the Jeep. Am I missing a step?

I think lifting it a bit would work okay. You'd just have to configure your straps/chains/ropes/etc to a length that would allow the top to hang slightly above the Jeep. Just high enough to allow you to drive out from under it, yet low enough that you could lift the corner and secure the hooks. Of course you could also do it like saltyaggie and use ratchet straps that you adjust a little as you go.

Yeah, I just release the ratchet mechanism a couple inches each time and work my way around the other two to lower the top slowly and evenly. I should also add that after lifting the top, I add safety chains so that the top isn't totally suspended by ratchet straps (may not be necessary, but I dont want to worry about it falling on my little one if she's in the garage).

^ good call, same mounting point / screw eye in the ceiling joist?

maybe it's because we have different ratcheting mechanism. When I test the ability to slowly release the ratchet mechanism with a friend pulling on one end, everything pulls through very fast and sudden. Are you holding onto the strap that is being released close to the hard top with your other hand on the ratchet release?

Yes, all tied to the same four eyebolts. Also, my ratchet straps behave just as you describe - they will let the top freefall if you don't control it by either holding the strap or keeping a hand under the top. The top is really not all that heavy to support, feels like 25-30 lbs at each corner.

That makes sense. I think they claim the top is around 150 lbs, so you're not supporting too much weight if you're lifting 1 corner at a time. It should definitely be doable.

Great! Thanks guys, once I receive and install the Topsy hinge hoist next week, I’ll give it a test. I guess I’m getting the black one since there wasn’t an option to choose red in the site and earlier posts said no more red hooks once they sell out.

Yeah, they haven't had red in a while. I actually waited to order until after they sold out of the red. The only red on my Jeep is the tail lights, so they would have looked out of place. The black blends well, and goes completely unnoticed.

just finished installing my Racor hoist and the topsy brackets and replacement cams from Topsy. couldn't be any more happy with the product. the installation was not bad either - probably 3 hours total, taking my time. I would rate this as super easy for anybody who has ever turned a wrench.

most importantly though, it's an awesome product in terms of functionality! love that they include the attachment for a power drill.

No concerns or issues with those straps or clasps? They seem pretty light duty. I actually ordered the clasps and didn't realize how small they were, so I need to get smaller straps than I ordered. Mine are 1.7" and no way they'll make it through the clasp. I would like to find larger clasps if anyone has any suggestions there!

I installed the racor rack and topsy pieces the other day and, just today, at long last, removed the roof of my JL.

It went well-enough, I guess. I had difficulties with the front brackets and getting them to rest comfortably and symmetrically. I confirmed that I had ordered the correct parts. I searched for photos of the install on a two door JL...no luck, just unlimited after unlimited. The Topsy site didn’t provide any additional information than is found in the printed installation instructions, which are, well, not very detailed.

It being after 5 pm on a Friday, and the whole roof-removal process in full-swing (bolts off, JL positioned, etc), I chose to modify things a titch: I moved the forward hockey-stick shaped brackets inward about 3 inches each. In other words, the brackets are no longer held in place with the eye-bolts at the edges of the front bar. See photos. It works great.

Now the question is did I perform the initial installation incorrectly? Or was I sent an incorrect pair of forward brackets?

Interesting. I installed my 2 door brackets this weekend and had the same problem. If installed as directed, the brackets are not close enough to slide under the hardtop. I didn't go so far as to drill new mounting holes in the hoist to fix it though. I did speak with Topsy today and they said I'm the first one that has said they don't fit/work. I need to snap some pics and send them to Topsy for them to try and figure it out. Only thing I can think of is Rancor changed the dimensions of their lift slightly or something.

The top only weighs a little over 100lbs. The straps are rated at 250lbs. The top has been hanging in my garage for the last two months with no issues.

I timed putting on my top today (including freedom tops, but not the 30 seconds to back in) ...

12 1/2 min

I use a little 4v drill to speed the bolts in with a separate t50 bit I grabbed at HD. I then hand tighten with Jeep socket wrench.

Hoisted the top today, all looks good.. ordered the extra parts to replace the plastic parts etc.

My question is, the directions say that the front hooks should wrap around the front eye hooks but not through the eye.. I look at pics and I see lots of folks going through the eye..

Big deal or no? I went thru the eye

I go around. I can’t imagine it matters other than you may need to level racor set up differently because distance is changing when back straps stay the same.
