Hello
I’ve had my 6 speed jl for over a month now, it is my first off road vehicle with a mt and love the way it drives. However, I am having trouble finding an effective way to back up my steep driveway when needed without the clutch burning up a little. This is mostly when it’s snowy out and i need to slip it so get more tourque with less speed. Just looking for any tips from veteran mt drivers as to not burn it but keep low speed higher torque in reverse. Thanks.

Have you tried putting it in 4lo? Wouldn’t that give you more torque and less speed?

In 4lo you shouldn’t even have to use the clutch. It’s nearly impossible to stall in 4lo unless you hold the brakes or hit a wall. :CWL:

sounds good. like i said i haven’t had it for too long and don’t back in often so i guess i haven’t covered all the bases. i also don’t think i’ve every really used 4lo in my life so didn’t really consider it for an option. thanks!

If a regear is in your future, this issue goes away. Once I went 5.13’s, I was able to easily back up my inclined driveway without “whoops” moments on 39’s.
If not, I suspect you’ll get used to it. I swapped jeeps and am back to 3.73 (I think), and stalled once so far.

I've stalled mine many times while doing more extreme rock crawling. I'm not sure that I'd call it nearly impossible ;)

probably won’t regear unless something changes in the distant future. but you’re right. i still haven’t gotten completely used to the mt yet, I almost exclusively drove and learned how to drive standard on sports cars. thanks for the info though!

I have the same issue with my steep driveway. The electronic throttle control is not very linear so it is hard to keep constant RPM while trying to smoothly climb up the driveway into the garage. I either lug the engine or rev it too high and hurt the clutch. Pulling in backward causes the rear wheels to slip if I give it too much gas. I don't want to switch to 4x4 on the dry pavement like that.

You might try also turning off hill assist in your settings. There are some who think this makes a difference. I noticed a small difference when disabling mine. Also if you're in snow - make sure you turn off traction control so you're not losing power to spinning wheels.

Another question is; how long do you have to own a Wrangler before it gets added to the vehicle(s) in your signature? ??

You can switch to 4x4 on dry pavement. Just don't do crazy cornering with it. People seem to have this idea that the instant they switch to 4x4 on dry surface they're going to shrapnel a diff or a tcase.
Straight backing up an incline and using 4x4 to assist is literally a best use scenario if losing traction.

I used to live on a steep hill and drive a Firebird Formula. I found holding the emergency brake while I got the RPMs up a bit before releasing the clutch helped a lot.

I know that and I usually come in at an angle into my driveway. I'd have to straighten the car and then engage 4x4 to clime up straight into the garage!
