Only reason I can see for the issue is one of the wires has insulation damage and end result..... a short (metal collar)
Just fixed mine with the metal collars and had the same issue. When tightened up and touching the frame the openers short out. Wrapped it in electrical tape and it works fine. Not a permanent solution, but will do until I get the plastic collars.
I know for a fact that I did not nick the wires while doing the mod. I think there must be a connection in the visor that is touching the extention arm and causing the short at the frame.

Just realized I'm being stupid...I can simply insulate the visor shaft with a bit of electrical tape and then clamp the collar to it. Should do the trick...

To close to the problem to think of that earlier - duh on me.

@Speed331

Take a piece of black shrink wrap and shrink it onto the visor shaft, then place the collar. Of course, you can use a few winds of electrical tape instead.

Please let us know how the electrical tape or shrink wrap works. I had my visor replaced under warranty, fully expect it to fail again, and am now out of warranty so I will be using this thread.

In all honesty, it works, but I'm not thrilled with it. It's been a week now and I can see that it is ever so slowly sliding out of the clamp. The grip just isn't good enough with the shaft wrapped. Also, despite grinding the plastic down as far as I was comfortable with, it still rests against the frame when tightened down, causing the plastic cover to bow in the middle a bit. It's barely noticeable, but offends my sense of aesthetics. I'm eventually going to pop it back off and use roaniecowpony's original fix with the push-nut and a few washers.

I appreciate the honest feedback. Thank you.

Any idea on the width of the split collars you used? I have not had this issue with mine

5/16 bore 63/64 OD 5/16 thick (8*25*8mm). Actually ground the thickness down to just under 7mm but it still rubs on the frame.

Really odd. Same dimensions as the one I used. I wonder if I ground the plastic down way more to allow it to seat deeper on the plastic trim piece?

I used the OPs friction washer fix and it’s been a week without any issues. Also replaced the crappy old seat rail stops with crappy new ones to mitigate the other absurd engineering issue with these JLs.

What's with the seat rails? Got a link to a discussion?

Absolutely brilliant!

Our driver 's side visor just fell off in front of my face. Fortunately, we are just barely within warranty so I am sure our local dealer will cheerfully and unquestioningly replace it :CWL:.

But I am bookmarking your post for when the passenger side visor falls off, or the repaired driver's side visor breaks again.

Thanks for posting this one!

Thanks for this write up! Fixed mine tonight with your instructions. works great now. FYI mine was driver side on 2020 JLUR looks like they have no plans on improving the design flaw.

Side note:
What I think might have been part of the issue. I noticed the mating surfaces where the shaft goes into the housing dont appear to be perfectly round causing a camming motion when you turn the visor causing added stress as it pulls the shaft down in the hole a bit. Seeing as how the retainer was thin plastic it wouldn't surprise me if that played a major roll in the failure.
