I have a '22 Rubicon with the factory Alpine subwoofer in the floor compartment. I would like to regain the lost space by removing the subwoofer. Has anyone done this? Will the stereo still work without the subwoofer unit plugged in? How is the sound quality without it? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

interested in this topic. I’ve thought about doing the same on JKU. My 2013 had the sun on the side. Then they moved it to the floor. I hate it on the floor. Dirt and debris fall through the screen and rattle on the sun face. You can’t take off the screen to vacuum it up. Stupid design. Stupid placement.

Whatever happened to "unplug it and find out"?
That's guaranteed to provide a faster and more accurate answer.

Interested to hear people's experience on this as well. I looked at it when I had everything apart to put the Rusty's tailgate hinge replacement/tire carrier on, and if I remember correctly it looked surprisingly complicated to unhook the subwoofer so I left it for now.

I removed the sub-woofer in our two-door Rubicon to gain more storage space. Surprisingly, the radio still has decent bass. This was done a year ago without any issues.
Removing it was not hard and can easily be reinstalled if wanted.

I have the husky liner (without the cutouts removed) over the subwoofer and all works fine.

Trying this out now, just have to figure out how to unplug the wires. And my search powers are not that great., apparently. I thought for sure there was a video on it, but I'm not seeing it now. I might just start yanking things and see what gives. ?

I pulled my subwoofer out pretty soon after bringing the Jeep home and starting the camper build-out in the cargo area. Occasional music still sounds fine to me but mostly I listen to podcasts and they sound good enough. Wiring was just a plug. Easy.
I am looking at getting rid of my sub/trim/carpet combo but would rather trade for that trio out of a non-subwoofer JLU.

So, I basically just unscrewed, unbolted, and unclipped. I taped over the ends of the plugs, jic, and I'm gonna see if I'm okay with the sound. If I like it, I'll figure out something to do to cover the hole or replace the lid.
I think that little bit of extra space would be great for storing emergency gear like a fire extinguisher, tow straps, etc. I've found a lot of roll bar attachment storage doesn't fit anywhere on a 2-door soft top. ?

Fwiw, I can hear the difference without the subwoofer installed, but I don't mind it. The backseat passengers also noticed the lack of bass vibration without knowing what had changed.
For me, the tradeoff is worth it. Now I just need to find a solid cargo cover flap and figure a good way to store the cords. It won't be difficult to reinstall. If you're not sure, try it out.

Pulled mine it sounds fine as did with it neither is anything to write home about. Just unbolted and pulled the single wire from the passenger side.

I have stuff needed rarely but want to have under there since I keep my spare inside. All my other stuff goes in a bin I strap on top for trips.

I don’t have the plastic back in so you can kinda see the sub plugs in just in front of the seatbelt.

I'm living life just fine without the subwoofer, and with the extra "scoop" space. Anyone have a ballpark figure for how much I should try to sell the sub? I know I should probably save it for when I sell the Jeep, but it's large, bulky and awkward. So I'd prefer the free space. (See a theme here? ;) )

You have the space. And we need the space to live!
