It is purely a personal preference. The constant stop and start was incredibly annoying. This also causes MUCH greater starter wear. That said, I rarely sit in stop and go traffic so when it used to activate it is probably magnified to me.
The e-torque doesn't use the starter in these situations.

But, isn't that part of the reason for the e-torque? Why eliminate it if there are benefits? I get that it may be more fore emissions, but if it functions properly and even saves a little fuel, I think I'd like to take advantage of that after spending the extra dough on this option.
Most of us dont want the option. It’s being forced on us if we want an auto 3.6. I wouldve paid more to NOT have it.

Starter wear? Not sure that is entirely a valid worry. From the owners manual, pg. 165

ESS vehicles have been upgraded with a
heavy-duty starter, enhanced battery, and other
upgraded engine parts, to handle the additional
engine starts. Vehicles equipped with eTorque
contain a heavy-duty motor generator and an
additional hybrid electric battery to store energy
from vehicle deceleration for use on engine startup
after a stop as well as providing launch torque
assist.

Perhaps our difference in perception is the we have eTorque and perhaps you don't have that option? Its very smooth.

Unfortunately it's on the manual 3.6L as well.

It's very smooth with the diesel too, but any mechanical part will have some wear when it's used like that. It's weird to me that it seems to bother so many people. I wonder if there's a demographic association.

I specifically went with the Hurricane 4 because it does not have the e-torque system. I did not want to deal with the overly complex system that gave such little in return.

Thanks, all. I didn't know that taking off your seatbelt shut off the feature. I have changed my habit to taking off my belt as the garage door opens instead of having to hit that button.

By the way, I was sitting at a light yesterday. It was about 90 degrees and I had climate control on auto. The air was blasting and the engine still shut off. Cold air continued blowing, but apparently it isn't supposed to shut off with the air on? Also another time I waited a long time at a light and it shut off, and a few seconds later started back up again while I was still stopped. I guess it knows when it needs to start back up because it's a drain on the battery.
Mine shuts off with the AC going. That isn't one of the reasons for it not to work. If the delay is too long, it will start up on its own.

I have E-torque on my JLUR 2.0 and it doesn’t bother me at all. Very smooth transition.
I have A.S.S. On my Ford F-150, so it uses the starter to restart, and I cant stand it. Jerky and sounds terrible. I had a custom tunes loaded in that also got rid of A.S.S. but the tune became corrupt of something. So I’m back to pushing the button every time I get to the first stop light.

As some have stated the eTorque is completely different than the annoying and useless ESS.

The ESS in my 2018 3.6 JL was a major reason I got rid of that mint Wrangler, I never had a failure, but the ESS was annoying, and based on others, the little battery buried in the engine was a nuisance, and source of problems.

Now that I have a 4xe, when at the stop light and every other vehicle fires up their ESS it's mildly amusing.

Count your blessings you have the eTorque and not ESS.

For those that have it and hate it, why not get the Start/Stop defeat device that is plug and play?
