No there will still be a legal case. The guy that did the shooting will likely face charges. He didn't engage them in the act nor was his life in danger. He tracked the guy for several miles and engaged him him when there was no immediate danger.
I’m Texas he may not face charges, it depends on the circumstances. A few years ago, a man in Fort Worth went through an attempted car jacking. After the car jacker ram away the car owner retrieved his gun from his car, chased down the thief and shot and killed him. No charges were filed. I’m Texas you can use deadly force to retrieve personal property.

Sec. 9.41. PROTECTION OF ONE'S OWN PROPERTY. (a) A person in lawful possession of land or tangible, movable property is justified in using force against another when and to the degree the actor reasonably believes the force is immediately necessary to prevent or terminate the other's trespass on the land or unlawful interference with the property.
(b) A person unlawfully dispossessed of land or tangible, movable property by another is justified in using force against the other when and to the degree the actor reasonably believes the force is immediately necessary to reenter the land or recover the property if the actor uses the force immediately or in fresh pursuit after the dispossession

My story is as follows.
I waited over a year to get my jeep.
iIn january Of 2021 I finally took possession of my jeep Rubi.
Only problem was most of the options I ordered were not on the vehicle.
Well I decided to order another one with all the options I wanted.
In March it got stolen.
I got my 2022 in June.
My advice is to get an immobilizer.
I also have a lock on my OBD port.
For added security I have a GPS tracker.
They tried to steal it twice but did not succeed!
Here are picks of my Jeep!

Sorry for the off-topic, but I'm curious, what is the black surround on the leading of your hood? I have never seen that before.

Nice looking Jeep!

this post is giving me much anxiety, I personally hate this trend of keyless entry and push start because of the constant broadcasting.

and now they can access the car computer through headlight wiring sounds ridiculous. does fca cars have this vulnerability?

locks can be picked in about a minute, and horn relay can be unplugged in seconds.

there are devices that detect tracker and hidden camera, because I have seen them back in 2019.

Nowadays really everyone is driving convertibles with top down and obd port exposed. while also sending your password out loud. Theft is always more sophisticated both stealing cars and information.

I've actually never done it myself, but something I do plan on doing at some point. Honestly I don't see any way this could screw up your engine. I mean even if you started it and didn't like the way it ended up, you can always reverse it.

I used to have zero experience with electrical work, now I have a pretty decent general understanding of electrical work. I've done a fair amount on my Wrangler so far. You got to start somewhere!

Here's the video which gave me the idea couple years ago.

It's not specifically a Wrangler in the video, but it does apply to any vehicle. Really all you're doing is cutting power to the fuel pump with a flick of a switch.
I like this idea. I’m thinking about using an existing accessory switch to power a relay that would function as the kill switch. Basically, hiding the kill switch in plain sight.

On an unrelated note, ripping off Americans and Canadiens must be a major contributor to Nigerian GDP…. So many of our theft, elder abuse, phone scams, and identity theft investigations lead there. What a remarkable contribution they make to the world for such an otherwise unremarkable African country…

I live in the same city as @Steph1 , as a matter of fact, heading to his place to install a start button kill switch this weekend.

Clear up a few things though as we have had a professional crew working the Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal corridor for a while now. We are seeing around 2 or 3 a week get stolen and that's just people reporting in the various Jeep FB groups.

They're not cloning keys. They have the same hardware the dealers have for creating a brand new key. They get the vin. Pop hood and pull horn and head unit fuse. Punch passenger side door lock and remove glove box. Directly attach dealer computer into the STAR rail behind glove box and program a new key. Drive away. In less than 5 minutes.

Then it's quickly sent to the port in Montreal which is well known to be massively corrupt. Off to Africa from there. We have literally seen a "Craigslist-like" website that is selling Jeeps with Canadian plates still on them in Nigeria. As an aside. We are seeing 4xe's get dumped after thefts because (just a theory) there is no charging infrastructure in Africa.

Absolutely at the bare minimum your hood pins should be enable to set the alarm off. Why TF jeep doesnt do this from factory boggles me. The dealer can't even do as far as they can tell. I've literally installed about 10 hood locks (the Bolt hood lock requires a heavy duty riveter I bought) and enabled pins on about 15 local jeeps. We have seen at least 2 instances where the horn going off alone has stopped a theft.

Regardless, I won't leave my jeep anywhere even remotely sketchy overnight. Even after I install the kill switch I won't because before they even realize they can't take the Jeep they've already fucked up your locks, glovebox and erased your keys.

To be honest, I'm quite surprised we haven't seen this in the US yet and truly hope this isn't the beginning of a spree down south. In saying that, maybe Jeep will finally get off their ass and come out with some sort of patch so these losers can't steal them easier than ordering a double double at Tim Hortons.
This is great info. I don't know much about the dealer system or the 'STAR rail behind the glove box,' but couldn't we cut a wire back there that would prevent them from setting up a new key? Or is that rail plugged into something already? I agree that FCA should step up on this. VW dealers have to sync with a computer in Germany to make new keys.

They haven't indicted this guy... yet..however he was returning fire (or really good at setting up the scene after the fact :)) https://www.cbsnews.com/colorado/news/elias-armstrong-suspect-deadly-shooting-car-theft/

I was watching a video on YouTube a while back about how easy it is to steal a Wrangler. Picking the locks is super cake, actually starting them is a little difficult but so I understand it's still doable.

Did they get your key? Or was your fob somewhere nearby? I removed my battery when I first got mine, and the battery in my spare as well. Now if you want to start my Jeep you need to press the fob into the start button. Really your best bet is installing a hidden fuel pump switch.
No, they didn't get my key but they may have cloned it without me knowing. I have since discovered that device they sold on amazon called Flipper zero....I don't think they even need to clone your key at that point!

There is ZERO danger placing a kill switch on the fuel pump relay.

You are simply adding a switch to the Fuel pump relay in the fuse box that turns power to the relay off.

Although on some older muscle cars people would add a valve/switch to the actual fuel line that cuts the fuel off.

If you get one of those special bags to hold your key FOB in while its in the house the signal can not be intercepted.

On the Dodge Hellcats and Scats Dodge had a TSB where you could have the RF Hub locked down so thiefs could not hook up to your gateway in the car and clone a key. The down side was if you lost both your keys you would have buy a new RF Hub and keys. $$$$$$

I am not sure they can or would do the same for the Jeep line. Dealers were very uneducated on the security TSB for the HellCats but its worth asking a dealer about it - RF Hub Lockdown.
I googled this and found where they are offering a free update for the Hemi Challenger. This was over a year ago. Why are not they doing this across the board??? @JeepCares can you send this up the flagpole and see?

Really going down a rabbit hole with this. Couldn't they just replace the RF hub?
What if you disabled the hazard switch? Would that prevent programming a new key?

I went through all the stages of grief yesterday. I even thought about buying another climate control to sabotage the hazard switch. Ultimately I decided a plain Jane kill switch hidden on an important component is the way to go.

Is there are a correlation between number of thefts on stock Wranglers (that are closer to stock or stock period), versus number of thefts on highly modded Wranglers?

Or is it all intertwined?

I believe from current FBI/National law enforcement agency statistics that the numbers are pretty equal. But those numbers also show that stock generally end up at border vs flashy/built going either on joy rides or to chop shops for the parts/accessories.
