Needing to access the SGW on a Wrangler is theft deterrent all by itself.

There is an owner or two on the TJ forum who have done that and regretted it, mostly because they forgot they left it in gear.
I won't lie, the first car I did this to drove away from me a couple times. Completely my fault. The second one was my VW and I was very careful to leave it in neutral.
The kicker is our manuals have a gear indicator and it would be easy to offer a factory remote start that worked only in neutral. But I get the liability concern.

The Best Anti Theft Device For Your Car or Truck . . . Period!

In 46 Years - Not One Vehicle Ever Stolen!

The Ravelco (pronounced Ruh-vel-co) Anti Theft Device is installed in an easily accessible place beneath or flush mounted in the dashboard of your vehicle. A removable 16 pin male plug (which when not in use connects to your key chain) makes all the electronic connections. A hidden armored steel cable protects the wires from the rear of the RAVELCO base on through to the engine compartment where all the connections are made and camouflaged. When the plug is removed from the RAVELCO, it is impossible to start the vehicle. There are more than 100,000 different combinations. NO MASTER PLUGS. An impossible obstacle for even the most persistent thief. No Bells or Whistles . . . Just Results!

I live in the same city as @Steph1 , as a matter of fact, heading to his place to install a start button kill switch this weekend.

Clear up a few things though as we have had a professional crew working the Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal corridor for a while now. We are seeing around 2 or 3 a week get stolen and that's just people reporting in the various Jeep FB groups.

They're not cloning keys. They have the same hardware the dealers have for creating a brand new key. They get the vin. Pop hood and pull horn and head unit fuse. Punch passenger side door lock and remove glove box. Directly attach dealer computer into the STAR rail behind glove box and program a new key. Drive away. In less than 5 minutes.

Then it's quickly sent to the port in Montreal which is well known to be massively corrupt. Off to Africa from there. We have literally seen a "Craigslist-like" website that is selling Jeeps with Canadian plates still on them in Nigeria. As an aside. We are seeing 4xe's get dumped after thefts because (just a theory) there is no charging infrastructure in Africa.

Absolutely at the bare minimum your hood pins should be enable to set the alarm off. Why TF jeep doesnt do this from factory boggles me. The dealer can't even do as far as they can tell. I've literally installed about 10 hood locks (the Bolt hood lock requires a heavy duty riveter I bought) and enabled pins on about 15 local jeeps. We have seen at least 2 instances where the horn going off alone has stopped a theft.

Regardless, I won't leave my jeep anywhere even remotely sketchy overnight. Even after I install the kill switch I won't because before they even realize they can't take the Jeep they've already fucked up your locks, glovebox and erased your keys.

To be honest, I'm quite surprised we haven't seen this in the US yet and truly hope this isn't the beginning of a spree down south. In saying that, maybe Jeep will finally get off their ass and come out with some sort of patch so these losers can't steal them easier than ordering a double double at Tim Hortons.

This is how my Trackhawk was stolen from secure parking at airport.

Keys were 2000 miles away.

So what can prevent the key copying or faking a new key with dealer equipment? Keeping the VIN hidden at all costs? Anything else?

Because they disable it easily either by killing the head unit or removing the antenna....

What would be the most cost effective way to deter thieves? What I have read here so far is:

1. Take batteries out of fobs, making them into dumb keys
2. Buy a Faraday bag - how much are those?
3. Add hood latch locks
4. Add alarms to the hood pins (how does this work)?
5. Cover up the VIN number - any legal issues created?
6. Kill switch- any warranty issues caused?

We already have cameras pointed at the driveway

Is LoJack helpful at all?

It is not "faking" a key it makes a new key just like your friendly local dealer does. No difference. If you buy the softwaree and hook up a laptop you too can program as many keys as you want! Feature not a bug. Basically you can do nothing until Stellantis overlords do what they did on my SuperStock to create a RF hub lockout to prevent anyone including them from making new keys. Hiding your vin is pointless you can read the vin right from the can bus when you hook up to make a new key. You don't have to type it in.

1. Pointless (This does minimally limit fob replay attacks which are super rare)
2.See above same thing if there is no battery in your fob no signial is escaping that a RF shield would block. Again these attacks (Key Replay) are extremely rare and super difficult to pull off.
3. Yes
4. Yes (Jscan)
5. Pointless
6. Yes (If you screw it up then no the dealer could deny a warranty) If done right prob not.

7. Actual security devices Like Ravelco, Drone, Compustar, Igla all work but $$$

I have the tazer with hood alarm enabled. It's stopped at least two attempts to get under my hood. I assume that's where they start and its scared them off both times.

That and being a manual transmission has likely saved me from theft multiple times. Covering the VIN isn't a bad idea.. I'll throw a sticker over it today.

I'll probably also hide an airtag in there. Some guy used one to track his audi a few weeks ago here in Denver. He located the vehicle and the minor thief started shooting. He shot back and killed the thief, no charges filed. Wouldn't suggest that but it worked :)

Is it possible for them to get the VIN electronically? I ask because I have no longer have VIN on my frame :) ... and the one on roll bar is covered

Also, with the start button killswitch you mentioned only stops it being started via button, not fob -- correct? Still worth doing? We may have to link up next time I'm in your neck of the woods ?
