Totally agree here. It is the dumbest invention in the history of mankind. Luckily, Jeep makes a model without ESS.
Totally agree, and on that model, the button that replaces the ESS defeat is way more fun!

I don't really care for it because it's more wear on the mechanics and another gizmo to break.
I bought a used JLU and the ESS never worked. I didn't know why and I wasn't going to drive 100 miles back to the dealer to complain about it. I did a lot of reading about the ESS on this forum, a whole lot, and discovered how to bypass the small battery so now there is no chance of my ESS working.

Curious what everyone’s opinion is on the start/stop function?
Well, since you asked....
I hate it.
Our first vehicle that had it was a 2018 Chevy traverse and there was NO defeat button.
It was one of the reasons we sold it.

I don't care how quick or smooth it restarts.
I don't want my engine shutting off until I shut it off.

Works fine for me. If I don’t want it I just turn on the a/c and it won’t engage it
Not true for the eTorque it will still turn off with AC on.. depends how close the cabin is to the requested temp.

I do not have the 2.0, so my experiences may differ from those who do.

These are my observations with my personal every day driving habits, tested by going 1 full week turned on, and another full week turned off. Calculated from the pump, not the onboard computer.

ESS enabled = 17.6 mpg.

ESS disabled = 17.5 mpg.

What this means for you? Do your own tests, not for me to decide.

What it means for me? 100% within the margin of error for MPG numbers, so as far as I'm concerned there is no benefit whatsoever. While I recognize that modern starters are designed with ESS duties in mind, the 3.6 itself as a whole engine is not. The button press on start is worth the 1/2 second to press until I finally order a module to disable it fully. Utterly useless to me. :)

I do know people who tolerate it more than others, and those that do tend to enjoy what perceived little gas savings and perceived positive green impact they achieve using it.
Took the liberty to add a couple words in your statement... as far as I know it is unproven that ESS does anything to help mpg, and is more green, all things considered vs. an engine without ESS in real world conditions.

Where is the phone number of the engineer that designed this idiotic thing? To me ESS just reduces starter life.

If Jeep really cared about saving fuel during the lifetime of our Jeeps they would build them better in the first place. I've wasted at least a couple tanks of gas taking mine back to the dealer for repairs because of poor quality. How many stop start cycles equals saving two tanks of gas?

3.6 auto without the e-torque, daily driver, short trip vehicle. I despise the start stop feature, the motorcycle battery buried in the Jeep, the added wear and tear on the starter, and the nagging notion of ....just more shit to go wrong. When the auxiliary battery goes I'm going to remove the small battery ground cable from the main battery ground, pull a fuse, and add a smart start stop switch. When the main battery goes I'm going to add the bigger battery and never look back. That's the plan.

I personally think these are terrible additions to modern vehicles. As for my diesel I don’t want that starting and stopping and more than it has to. To be honest though it’s in a “not ready” state most of the time anyway simply due to the Myriad of conditions that have to be met before it even goes to a ready state, which 75% of the time it never meets. Perhaps there are more conditions for the eco diesel than the gas variants. Either way I turn that off anyway. I had a mini taser handling things but I have recently removed that and no longer use it.

I’ve got a 6mt and the ss works great in that format. Never gets in the way
Agreed, the MT is night and day different in the manual vs the auto in regards to control. If I feel like I will not be stopped long I simply keep the clutch depressed. If I feel like it will be longer stop I let out the clutch and leave it in neutral, no worries either way.

Barely perceivable in my JL with the etorque.
I've driven Mercedes top cars with the regular ess and it sucked.
My wife turns her's off in the GC.

I owned an 18 JLU and hated the ESS with a passion. It had a noticeable delay when restating the engine. Learned how to press the brake just enough to stop without triggering the ESS. That was until my Tazer came in for the rescue...

I then traded in the 18 for a 22 JLUR with the eTorque and what a difference. Going in already with a "Disable" in mind I was surprised how quick and smooth the stop / start was compared to my 18 model. So much so I do not even disable it any more.

Granted with all the weight I have added to the Jeep 14.5 MPG is a miracle. :)

Not a fan. Not so much because the engine is shutting off, but because of the enormous addition of wear and tear to the starter, and more importantly, the ring gear. Going from 4 or 5 starts a day to 40 or 50 a day is absolutely accelerating wear, and I have zero desire to pull the trans and replace the flexplate at any point.
