The shock will have gas pressure pushing it upward. Use a pry bar or large screwdriver to pry the top of the shock into alignment with the hole.

When you buy the bolt, get a grade 10.9 bolt. This is the rating on the strength of the steel it's made from. If you get a common low grade bolt (typically grade 5.8) it will be about half the strength and may fail after some time. But could be used temporarily.

If you locate a grade 10.9 bolt of the proper size, it should be torqued to 81 lbs/ft. If its a grade 5.8, torque it to about 50 lbs/ft.

Most of the bolts you'll have on your jeep will be grade 8.8, 10.9, or 12.9

Now is your opportunity to start your tool set.

This is extremely helpful. I managed to find an 8.8. What should I torque that to? I did have a torque wrench, though it’s been a few years since it’s gotten use!

I just installed my AEV 2.5 and AEV calls for 80ft/lbs on the upper rear shock

Somewhere around 70 lbs/ft should be fine. It's just stretching the bolt to retain it from backing out. That bolt is in "double shear" in the application. That is: there is a shear in two locations, one on each side of the shock bushing. All that matters is that the bolt remains tight and the load will be taken at two locations.

JL torque spec for upper shock mounts front and rear is 81 ft-lbs.

The AEV 2.5? it sucks worse thing ever....just kidding. my only issue is I am running light ie stock plastic bumpers and it is at about 4" of lift. it handles great altho have not been offroad with it. I am going to moab early june so it will get a work out. going down a washboard gravel road it is great and on twisty pavement incredible. some would think mine looks goofy because I am running 35x10 tires so tall and skinny.

Ok managed to get the bolt on and torqued reasonably well. The only thing I’m unsure on (and this is a temporary fix regardless) is that the bolt is torqued directly to the bracket. I was expecting to then put a locking nut on the other side, but it really doesn’t fit back there. Did I do that wrong?

In any case, it’s much better now thanks to all of your advice guys, thanks.

Measure from top of axle tube to bottom lip of coil housing like in pic …..stock Rubi measures about 11.25 ish inches there….. it looks like you have a 3-3.5” Rough Country lift on there now….

Interesting - I thought for sure this thing was lifted, but I’m measuring in the 11.25ish range. Thanks for the info.

I dunno about "lifted", but this spring isn't the common gloss black that the factory uses, and it has no part number tag.

Those are aftermarket springs, and looking at your pics in your first post, the fender gap suggests you have some lift, assuming those are 35 inch tires….However, if it’s a Rough Country lift it then anything’s possible, could be the wrong size springs, could have settled, it’s hard to say…… best thing you can do is get that crap off there and do a reputable lift….
