My wife's JLUR has a 3.5" MC GC lift with 37" KM3's that fit in my garage, with room to spare. My best friend has a JTR with a 4.5" lift and 40's also fits in the same garage. Hers doesn't have a sky one touch but I would guess you'll be ok. FWIW, hers is a 2.0 with the 4.10's and she still gets between 16-17 (17.4 is the best since the lift two months ago) so I think you'll be good with the 4.56's.

And regret 37's? Heck yeah, I wished I had gone with 39 or 40's!!

So I’ve read through all of these posts (several others as well) and I would like to hear opinions on my current plan…..

I have ordered a 2023 Rubicon Unlimited with the Xtreme Recon package. I had intended to just buy BMG KM3’s in the same 315/70R17 that comes from the factory, but after reading these posts I have been convinced to move up to 37’s….

Assumptions:

The 4.56 gearing that comes on it will be more than adequate. (Based on the consensus here that seems to be that 4.10 is doable, with 4.88 being ideal)

It will come with the Rubicon high clearance fenders and a Mopar lift (1 1/2ā€) that falls just short of the Mopar 2ā€ that everyone here says has ample clearance. So I’m thinking that BFG KM3 (smallish 37’s) will clear in the front but probably still rub on the plastic bump in the rear.

If I do have rubbing, my plan would be to first heat and flatten the bump. If that doesn’t do it, I would have the options of either an addition to the rear bump stop, or fender chop/high clearance fender set….(depending on where and how much contact I have)

If I’m going big I would also like to go with the wider 37x13.5R17 tires. The Mopar bead-lock wheels that are a part of the package are 8ā€, but become the recommended 8.5ā€ minimum when used with the optional beadlock rings. With a backspacing of 4.4ā€ I think these should work as well.

I would plan on the Tazer for tire size change and stop-start disable.

I am looking for the best of all worlds. Great performance off-road, and tame enough for long highway trips….

My only other concern is garage clearance. These posts show 75ā€ as full height with 37’s and a 2ā€ lift, but I have ordered the one touch sky top and can’t find anywhere how much more it sticks up when open. It looks like 4ā€-5ā€ additional which would just clear, but if it’s 6ā€ or more I would have a problem….

Thanks, and any advise is welcome as I would prefer to do this only once….
Why does it need to clear the garage door with the sot open? Isn't the point of that top choice push button convenience of opening and closing? In the time it takes for the garage door to open, couldn't you just close the top?

Yes if I had to, but I can also see myself wheeling it into the garage with the top open and not remembering it until I hear an awful ripping sound…?

4 year old post but I get that the answer might help folks trying to decide. I installed a set 3 years ago along with a Mopar lift. I mod'd my JLR, 3.6 ,auto.'s suspension to do off road trails rated less than extreme. Off road the 37's allowed me to experience many popular westerner U.S. Jeep trails. This spring, after 30K flat towing and almost 20K showing on the O.D., the 37's were down to 20% tread. After all that experience running 37's off road, I have no regretes. But I replaced them with new 35's. IMHO, a 2.5" lift and 35's and armor are all my JLR ever really need. I don't think I would have come to the same conclusion had I a JLUR because of it's longer wheel base. I probably would have wanted a 3.5" lift and 37's with a JLUR.
The wheelbase on the 4dr definitely calls for more tire and/or lift. We've run the Rubicon in a TJ with 4.5" lift and 35's, a JK with a 3" lift and 35's, an XJ with 4.5" lift and 35's, a WJ with 4" lift and 31's and then later with 35's, a wagoneer with 37's, and now the JLUR with 4" lift and 38's. Aside from the WJ on 31's and the massive body and low hanging Ford 10.25 rear dif on the wagoneer, I'd say each one had about the same choice of lines and/or scraping sliders and skids on the tougher obstacles. I have no doubts we could get a JLUR on 35's through the trail, but there would likely be some work stacking rocks, jacking, and/or winching involved. I don't want to do that these days unless I absolutely have to. I love the fact that this Jeep is built to the point we can just drive the trails. No winching, no spotting, just picking good lines and wheeling. Not constantly dragging it over obstacles which just isn't relaxing.

sourdough really hit it on the head... if your SUPENSION is working like it should and nothing is binding, 35-40'' can wheel the same areas.. the 40'' crowd is for talking points and a larger tire will break over easier no doubt.

Can a 35'' go all the places a 40'' can? absolutely... just more effort

I wouldn't say all the places, unless you count winching the same as driving to the same places? If that's the measurement, they took a nearly stock tracker on a 31" tire through Pritchett canyon on dirt everyday. Was it fun? Not at all, just a bunch of work. It took twice a long as it should, and it was broken by the end. I guess a tracker on 31's can go anywhere a Jeep on 40’s can... with enough support vehicles, rock stackers, and winching. At some point you just don't have the clearance period. Then there's traction, the bigger tire will always have more traction than the smaller tire everything else being equal.

I couldn't agree more. I over built my Jeep to be capable of more than I plan on actually doing with it. Life has supplied me with far more than my gain share of puckering moments and bleeding over every last inch. I just want to relaxingly point my Jeep at less extreme things. And some widened eyes moments are still welcome. Gotta exercise the heart rate here and there.

Don't get me wrong, I still push the limits at times. Gutbuster at stoney lonesome in May, in the rain was dumb. Slipped off my line, driver's rear dropped in a hole attempting to climb the massive ledge at the top. Passenger front tire was 4-6' in the air, a quick shift into reverse brought it down and I pulled cable (after some cussing from the wife). Definitely had the heart rate WAY up and could have easily cost me $60k, but I didn't drive 2300 miles to not try it.

I think we're on the same page. Whites of the eyes and a heart rate like I just ran down the block are warmly welcomed. Just not looking to chase guys in buggies or youtubers earning clicks. Those I'll be happy enough to pull out of the way and watch.

You can, but the one day when something is on your mind and you forget, the top gets damaged!
