285/75r17 Toyo AT3’s. Put them on immediately after taking delivery and they are excellent. Stock suspension, and it clears tailgate. Only thing I had to do was recalibrate the speedometer.

Big thanks to Matt @Discount Tire for helping me out

This is an old thread but here is my 2021 Willy’s with rubicon springs and 285/75/17 Toyo AT3 .
for a short time I had 35s on my Jeep with just the rubicon springs, it was way too stuffed.
I picked up these tires and rims off of marketplace for 1500$ Cad.
Next I have quadratec Recon wheels coming in black to swap out for these ones in the photos.
hope this helps someone who is watching this tread and contemplating tire/lift/rim combos

It’s only been a day since I put them on but everything feels good. They are smooth and I like this sizing for non-rubicons especially.
Just need to change out these rims I don’t like them.
I’m thinking about doing either the rough country 2.5 spacer lift or just getting black painted rubicon high flares.

I bought my 285/70R17s right after I bought my Rubicon last year. My son needed new 33s for his Tacoma, so I took the opportunity to get bigger tires on my Jeep.

285/70R17 Nitto Ridge Grapplers come in a load range C and are 33.86" tall when new. It is a great tire size for a stock JL Rubicon on stock wheels. They fill the wheel wells nicely, they fit the 7.5" rims, and the spare fits perfectly. Even the high brake light is fine.

No rubbing at all fully stuffed or at full lock turning on the Rubicon. I had only a barely noticeable loss in acceleration and a barely noticeable loss in braking power, which I am already used to. The 285 width tire gets better gas mileage than what you can get with a 315 or 12.5" wide tire, almost identical to the stock 33s. I get 8th gear in the auto on the highway.

My Metalcloak 2.5" lift I recently bought makes the tires look small, but it's not as bad as the 33's would have been. Since I can't buy new rims and tires now, ($5,000!) I am glad I have these 34's instead of running with 33s.

This picture is with the 34s on the stock rims and suspension. You can view my thread for more pics and info.

I had a 2020 Willy's and ran Nitto Ridge Grapplers 315-70-17. Pretty much 35 x 12.5 just metric sizes were much cheaper. I never had an issue with them, and the ride was fantastic over those Willy's MT tires.

No failures, just needed spacers because the full turn the fronts rubbed a hair. You are gonna need to change rear tire carrier. I used Smitty Built and it worked perfect. Get used to being in 7th gear, as it doesn't like to find 8th with those big tires.

I know have the tires on the new 2022 Rubicon 392. No spacers, same great ride. Either way you'd be happy. I just like the 35", personal preference is all.

Enjoy the Willy's!!!
Got any pictures of that Willys on 35’s?

Recently I downsized from 35x12.5 to 285/75R18 (34.8x11.2) tires.

I miss the retro wheels, but the Jeep drives and rides so much better with the lighter, narrower, quieter tires. Plus I gained a couple MPG in the process!

I briefly considered that size until I saw how much they cost... :surprised:

When my new Rubi takeoffs finally down I'm probably still going to have sticker shock with the 17s though.

Keep in mind these are 18” tires.

Nevertheless, I paid $380 per tire, which is below the cost of a 35x12.5 AT tire in this day and age.

I had been contemplating doing this switch for awhile. But the only tires available then in 285/75R18 were Duratracs and Discoverer ATs, both of which weighed as much as regular 35s.

Nokian just release its Outpost AT six months ago. These tires weigh 10 lbs less than the 35s I had on. Add to that Nokian’s reputation for winter performance, their 60,000 mile warranty, competitive prices, and it became a no-brainer for me.

Discount Tire then threw in an additional 5% off and 12 months no-interest to sweeten the deal.

Yep, I've still got my 18s in the house, I just recently bought Rubi takeoffs though so my next set (After the Falkens wear out) will be for the 17s.

I'll have to look up the Nokian tires you've got, as back when I was researching the possibility of going for 285/75R18 all I found were the Duratracs that were MUCH more expensive than the same tire in 255/70 or 275/65. If I didn't get these takeoffs I'd probably have stayed with the same size I've been running.
