The restart is as you put it is, "buggy". For the most part it does shut off, and stay off. But there are on some occasions it will restart with no start prompting. This Jeep does have a stop shut off switch, meaning when the Jeep is stopped the engine will shut off and restart when gas is applied. I have only witnessed this one time, it was in neutral at a stop light. I can shut this feature off. But occasionally, again this is sporadic.

On the manual, ESS (that shut off/turn on annoyance at stoplights) is triggered by the clutch position sensor (not the gas pedal*). It only turns the engine off if you’re stopped, out of gear (in neutral), and the clutch is engaged/pedal is released.

Non-manual specific reasons ESS will not turn your engine off are things like a weak aux battery (golf cart battery under your PDC/fusebox), AC (or heat) on too high (large electrical draw), etc

If you start moving (e.g. roll down a hill, if you disengage the clutch/put it in gear, or get out of your seat (maybe open your door), the engine will turn back on.

If you notice your engine shut off before you hit the start/off button, ESS engaged and turned your engine off.

I’ve said it sounds related to ESS because on a manual that’s the only factory/OEM thing that can start your engine other than the start/off button. You haven’t actually said whether or not this is happening, but at this point I’ll assume it isn’t.

At least on my manual, there is no correlation between brake pedal and ESS operations, and if you use the parking brake I know it’s possible for the engine to shut off from ESS and turn on again when you try to leave the Jeep. (Hey, I’m a software engineer and like to test programming conditionals in my appliances/vehicles. But I never thought to test letting ESS turn off the engine and then hitting the start/off button).

Edit: *I’ve also never attempted to rev my engine while it’s off, so it is possible applying gas while ESS has the engine off might trigger the engine to turn on.

OP: Have you tried putting the Jeep in gear after turning it off and applying the brake and leaving it? I'd not test this is a garage, but in an open area just in case, but I'd be curious if the Jeep tried to start itself when in gear as opposed to Neutral.

Stupid question @My wranglers, but why would you put it in neutral to park it? As others have said: it won't happen if you park it like it's intended to be parked. Still a weird thing, but easy to make it go away.

My "avengers" dash light came on, and ESS is no longer working. But the Jeep runs just fine. And I always hit the button on start-up to disable the ESS. So I never use it anyway. But is there any danger driving with the ESS no working?

On this forum at least, it’s really common to do an aux battery disconnect (if equipped/not e-torque) and permanently disable ESS. If you don’t disconnect the aux battery (and jumper or remove a fuse), your aux battery might prematurely kill your main battery.

Thanks. I'll get it checked out.

Usually the 1st sign 1 or both of your batteries are on the way out. No danger, until it won't start due to a low battery.

My Jeep was manufactured in Toledo, Ohio. It's a base model. That means I have roll up and down windows. Key entry. Basic radio (no gps screen). So it is not remote start. It is push button start. It is a 6 speed manual transmission.

When I go to exit the car I, stop, put the car in neutral, pull the emergency brake. Shut the car off. Open the door. Radio shuts off,I put my feet on the running board. The car turns itself on.
How are you “shut the car off”? Any chance you are leaving ignition in run position and ESS is starting it back up? Although it shouldn’t start with door open I don’t think.

Another noob that went dark after the membership addressed the issue presented to us. It'd be nice if more folks would provide follow-ups as a basic courtesy.

Embarrassingly stupid user error is usually enough to make someone go away.

Maybe she went on vacation or better yet, an extended remote camping/overland trip.
