Jeep Wrangler JL MS-12991 RECOMMENDED; API SN REQUIRED Screenshot_20230606-065955

I was going to buy just API SN oil without the Wrangler special certification thingy. I've been using Quaker State for about the last 10 years because I'm a total cheapskate. But I've also had zero issues with the brand. While searching for the best prices around for just API SN, I found that I can get this Quaker State at my local Walmart for just under $50. So it looks like I'll be meeting the recommended and the required specifications.

I'm at 4955 mi as of when I got to work this morning since my last oil change. So it looks like I'll be doing that oil change this weekend. ;)

I've been using this oil as well for the same reason, and also because I change at 5K mile intervals (fuel filter at 10K).
I'm at almost 19K miles here, no issues that I have noticed...Will be my 3rd time using this oil once I do another oil change at 20K.

That is what I used for between changes top off and now that my three FCA freebies I used it for my 40k oil change. So far so good.

One thing to note is the ash content in the oil. The MS 12991 oils have a very low ash content to prevent premature emissions system failures from blockages in the DPF. Many of the popular oils (like Rotella) have a higher ash content than is recommended for our gen3 ecodiesel systems. This is why rotella is approved for the gen 2 ecodiesels (grand Cherokee, Ram) but not ours- different emissions system.

Exactly. I’ve been following some discussions on one of the ecodiesel Facebook groups and there’s a slew of used oil analysis postings with various oil brands. There’s a big difference in wear metal levels and other contaminants…and it ain’t pretty with most of the cheaper oils. Rotella apparently shears very very easily.

I’ve been running Total Quartz 9000 Energy since 1000 miles. I’m now at 44k miles and everything has been fine so far with the DPF. But, read recently on one of my rabbit hole searches that the TQ 9000 Energy is considered low ash and not a very low ash oil. But…..it’s got the MS 12991 certification. So, that makes me wonder how it has the MS 12991 cert if it’s gonna plug the DPF eventually. ??ā€ā™‚

You are correct, Rotella-T6 has a SLIGHTLY higher ash content than 12991. But in my opinion...and it's just MY opinion, the ash content is so low and so close to the spec, you'd have to run hundreds of thousands of miles to see the difference or ANY difference.

I also PERSONALLY think Shell doesn't give a crap about spending $$$ get approved by Stellantis/MOPAR for a handful of Jeep diesels, we're a peanut market to them.

These are just my opinions, but I presently have 50,000 miles in the little 3.0 diesel with Rotella T6.
People just get WAY too obsessed with oil and over think it, change it early/change it often.

Wish me luck, I'm shooting for 200,000 miles on this rig...lol

Here's another thought...ash is actually considered part of the lubricant package, Low ash means less lubricity at the expense of protecting the moving parts to save the DPF. I vote to save the engine at the expense of the DPF.

The amount of ash difference between the R6 and 12991 is extremely small from reading on the two. 12991 is only recommended now but my dealer uses the mopar 5w40 12991

That sounds like an expensive dealer! I hope they give you discounts!

It's not a huge deal though, if things keep going in the direction they are, it's only a matter of time before we're not even allowed on the road anyways.

This is absurd.

Sure, oil is oil. But it’s the additives that count.

Now, the engineer said ā€œboss, ive looked at all the oils specs and found that the one that meets the performance requirements is an ms-12991 oil.ā€ And the boss said ā€œare you sure?ā€ And the engineer said ā€œyep, been looking at it for 3 days now. I mean, i can probably agree that something else will work in normal conditions, but then again, you never know what these knuckle heads will do with their ā€˜rigs’, so the safe bet is ms-12991.ā€ And the boss said ā€œok, print it.ā€

at least that’s how it goes at work.

*disclaimer: i havent read the ms-12991 spec, dont really care too. Because, someone else did, over and over and over again. So i trust that it’s what i’m supposed to use, regardless if someone else is using cooking coca butter as lubricant.
