I have a 18 JLU Sport S that is bone stock. I am hoping here in the up coming months to get some new goodies for the Jeep. I am looking at the Mopar 2" lift kit (people have advised this gives the sport and Sahara models close to 3" lift), a new front bumper and a winch. My questions comes down to the size of tires. I am not looking to do crazy crawling, but want to be comfortable enough to go on some decent trails. I am debating between 33s or 35s. My question is with 35s what would I have to get with it? I read I would have to get the tailgate reinforcement, gear ratio changed, speedo/alignment. I am not sure what else. Would I also just be able to use the stock rims from my sport s(17" painted granite rims)

I think if I got 33s I wouldn't have to do as much to get the jeep ready, but don't want to be disappointed and want to move to 35s 6 months down the road and be stuck with trying to sell tires.

Any help or guidance would be great. I have searched through these forums and have seen a lot of conflicting opinions.

Buy once, cry once is good to live by.

Buy a quality lift or something that will work for you and you can improve on like a rock krawler stock mod etc.

Go to 35s right away

Theres no right way or wrong way, you can spend money in a hurry, snowball effect.

Biggers tires, now you need to regear, and a spare, need to figure out how to support the big spare

Tires... Look at these - Nitto Ridge Grapplers in metric size 285/75r17 in load range C. They measure out at just under 34" on my old TJ, and are by far the best tires I've had on any vehicle. When I sold my TJ last month, the set had 12K miles on them and had lost 1mm of tread depth. They took me anywhere I wanted to go off road, and they stuck to the road like velcro in the rain.

My JLUR should be delivered in the next week or so. If I don't like the stock BFG KO2, I'll go buy another set of the same tires to replace stocks with.

You will want to re-gear your differentials.

I'm currently running the Yokohama Geolander MT G003 in 35s on my JKUR. they are one of the quietest MT tire I've ever runs and they have done really well at Hidden Falls offroad park. knock on wood. no punctures, no tears and no tread chunking.

18 JLU Sport S that was bone stock.
- Mopar 2" lift kit (looked funny with stock tires and rims) raised it to almost 3"
- Rubicon 17'' wheels
-2.0 spacers on all
-OEM Rubicon tires 33"
-Looks perfect now
- Rides smooth on payment and much better on trails now
-rock sliders from Rubicon

I also have a fully loaded 2018 JLUR with the same items as above.

The Sport S and the Rubicon handle almost anything you are willing to attempt.

If I did not own a Rubicon currently, I would have got another Sport S with LSD and added the same parts and saved a bunch of money.

Put re-gear on the bottom of your list until you lift it and get the tire size you want, and then drive it, some people are perfectly happy with the performance of the stock gearing on larger tires, especially with the auto transmission. You may gain a little MPG back by regearing but you will never get it all back. FWIW i'm very happy with Mickey Thompson ATZ P3's in 35x12.5 on mine.

There are a few locals that are selling rock sliders for just $25 with only 300 miles on them and no damage and a few others that are selling their rubicon take offs for about 1000 for all 5 which in my opinion is a steal(just no TPMs).

Are the spacers needed on the sport when going that large I know with 35s people say to get them.

-Your current wheel sensors swap over to the take off wheels and tires.
- Spacers in my opinion let you use your current wheel and tire but provide a wider stance that gives the Jeep the look of bigger tires.
- Either go with correct "backspacing new wheels" or add the spacers to current wheels and you will be ready for 35's (now you must deal with speedo recalibrations, TPMS etc with 35's or larger.

I put 35's on my Rubicon and drove down the Interstate at 70MPH for 1 hour and when I got home the 35's came off and I put my OEM Rubicon wheels and tires back on.

35 ,37 look perfect on Jeeps with a lift, but I will never do that again and just stick with 33's and the 2" spacers and ride till I can't ride no more.

Re-gear for 33 or 35? That seems extreme.

Im manual on 35s and regeared. Jeep is amazing. Crawls right along in 4LO and can use 6th gear

Jeep is amazing to drive, better than stock. Its extreme to me that you’d want to drive a dog shit jeep on 35s that cant move and sucks to daily drive. $1500 to make it drive properly is a small price on what people invest into jeeps

If you have your heart set on Mopar lift then I suggest you purchase front adjustable track bar, rear adjustable track bar or relocation bracelet, front lower adjustable control arms, and some rk or rancho coil spring isolators. I would price all that out and add it to cost of Mopar lift. Now see if it’s more than rk 2.5” X factor lift. It also comes with all eight control arms. I started with Mopar lift now only the shocks and springs are left, I have rk everything else. A friend of mine put Mopar lift on his sport s and he’s already ordered his extra parts to get his geometry straightened up. As for regearing, if you have 3.6 with auto, you’ll be surprised how well it handles 35s. IMHO I’d wait on that mod until last, if at all.....:)

MT vs auto is an important distinction. Many people on here have been fine up to 35s without re-gearing but, of course, re-gearing will make you feel like the drive is better. The auto trans handles the bigger tires much better than the MT in stock configuration. I think re-gearing is great and I want to do it myself at some point but terrifying someone into doing it is unnecessary, IMO. 2.0 vs 3.6 is an important distinction as well but that is a different battle. To each his own.

Ya I am running a 3.6 Automatic, wasn't sure on the re-gearing part. I mean I not going to be going on some crazy trails with huge rock crawling. I just want to be able to clear basic obstacles and enjoy easy trails.

I did watch a youtube video of a guy installing the mopar lift kit himself and he did mention to get new front spring pad, new track bars and he recommends a new steering stabilizer as well. I do like the fact mopar is all covered under warranty and engineered by jeep, but at the same time other 3rd party options have had a year to release lift kits as well.
