(I *was* getting an intermittent locker error for a while last year, but it turned out to be nothing more than dirty wheels.)
How do you get an error for dirty wheels? Anyone else get this? My wheels are often dirty, no errors. Maybe I'm not getting them dirty enough?

The front wheel sensors are fully inside the unitized hub and no debris can get in there, if the hub is healthy. The rear sensors are inside the brake drum/backing plate and can get dirty from submersion in mud/water and possibly just dust. But they are Hall Effect sensors and are very tolerant of debris, unless its magnetic.

?‍♂ Beats me. All I know is a 900 mile round-trip that included light off-roading and some deep puddles fixed it. That was back in September and problem has never returned.

How do you determine which sensor is the right one. Thinking about setting up aand potting a reserve to have on hand. There has to be a way to check for the right one. I can’t see installing and removing until the right one is found. Had my rear one replaced under warranty by dealer last year or so ago and it was replaced pretty quick. Like one hour.

I just bought a z auto jumper harness for $180. Unless there's a downside, I doubt I'll replace the sensor.

That is literally how you check to find the ones you need.

I've gotten the "service 4wd system" error twice now from dirty wheel sensors. A 4wd vehicle should have a transmission output sensor instead of relying on ABS sensors to determine slippage. Just Jeep being Cheap.

I understand that. I’m just saying there has to be a better way. Since everything else is keyed to your vin maybe. Just saying. I’m sure there is someone with a better idea. Anyway thanks for the reply.

Nah, it's the nature of the connector and the fact that gears aren't that precise. I think. I ended up having to get them and of the 5, only 3 worked. Sorry if I came off as a dick. Lol.

Every manufacturer has gone that direction.

Yep. And we have high fructose corn syrup instead of cane sugar. Doesn't make it right; doesn't make me like it. Somebody needs to put the bean counters in their place and focus on customer desire over profit.

Thanks to this write up, I got this done on my 2023 4xe last weekend at 10K miles. I was surprised at how dirty the front diff fluid was; from reading here I expected the front to be cleaner than the rear, but they were about equally dirty on mine. Both axles had stuff accumulated on the little magnets as well, but the sensors themselves were still dry. One disappointing discovery was that the axle drain plugs have been removed from both axles now. Thanks to the OP for putting this together!

Interesting. Are you running in 4-hi-auto regularly? My front was much cleaner when I did mine, but I hadn't done much off-road driving before opening it up.
