Followed instructions and potted my sensors last weekend. I have a 22 that was built in July and with 4100 miles on it I already had oil in the rear sensor so I don't think they have done anything to remedy this problem from the factory.

Thanks very much for the writeup. You may want to update the initial install instructions with how to clean out oil in the sensor. I found advice for that but it was buried deep into this thread and I didn't find it until after I had already finished potting them.

Initial Post has been updated with a step for cleaning the sensor if oil is present.

Thank you.

Update: Swapped my oil out at 5k and potted the sensors at that time. I’m at 15k miles now with multiple wheeling trips and everything is working properly with no warning lights. Thankful for members like you @chevymitchell !
You're welcome, man. :fist bump:

That would be a good thing to try. If I can get my hands on a bad sensor, I can scope it and bring it back to life, if it's possible.

From other posts that have been made on this subject, I believe the hall affect sensor itself or one of the two capacitors are failing once shorted.

Thanks man. I just enjoy working on things. They're all big Lego's to me.
I think my front sensor died. I ordered a Z Auto bypass. I'll try to resuscitate the old one. Not holding my breath.

I used these instructions to pot the sensors on my wifes then new Rubi with 2,000 miles on it. That was nearly two years ago and it has about 16k miles on it now. The lockers have not been used much but this summer she tells me she wants to learn to wheel it. No issues with mine either, very happy I did it seeing how many end up with oil in them.

Outside of normal electrical component failure, they should last for a very, very long time, once potted.

When I first bought my JL I potted my sensors around the 400 mile mark but traded it in with around 7500 miles on it and bought a JT and I potted those sensors at 894 miles and now have 33k miles on the clock with zero issues and use my lockers at least once a month with zero issues. I have tried to tell others about this but they just shrug it off as not needed and I still see countless rubicon owners on social media complaining about locker issues. It's such a simply preventative maintenance task yet the masses won't do it.

Dude same thing here…I’ve told plenty of people and most just say that’s why they have the warranty. I’m thinking I’d avoid the dealer service area at all costs!

I think a significant portion of owners are just too afraid to do any maintenance on their own.

I might feel differently if there was actually a fix to the problem but there’s not. Your rig will just sit and wait for a new axle and once the warranty expires you’re screwed. One of the many things that makes me question giving Dana a penny of my money (other than for gear sets).

They actually sell the sensor, now, but it comes in a pack with several. Apparently they all look alike, but only one of them is the right one. Trial and error to find the winner.

Potting my sensors is the most satisfying mod I’ve done. I’m no mechanic, but @chevymitchell made instructions that even I could follow.

Coming up on 5yrs and 60,000 miles and my lockers work great. (I *was* getting an intermittent locker error for a while last year, but it turned out to be nothing more than dirty wheels.)

You recall how much that sensor pack costs? Just curious

Yeah but it’s still not a fix and still an issue when the warranty expires. Pot early=problem solved.
