I have heard it from both people with 35's on stock wheels, and at least one individual with 4.5" backspaced 17x9 wheels. So it's an issue either way.
I am thinking about getting ProComp 315/70 M/T's and putting them on my stock rubicon wheels. I have a 2 door rubicon and will probably get the ProComp 2" leveling kit as well. Does anyone know or think I will have an issue off road with any rubbing due to back spacing or height?

Not with that setup. You should be fine.

Mopar beadlock wheels are a +12mm offset. Perfect in my opinion. I don’t like tires that stick out too far. These stick out 1-1.5”.

Hey those rims look GREAT - exactly what I’m looking for! Are they Method Roosts? (Pic attached) - if so how did you black out the silver hub rings on the side shots? Perfect rim :)

I was wanting to run my 18” stock wheels on my Sahara but after checking with several folks and talking to @TTEChris I decided it was best to run smaller wheels with a larger offset so went with. 2.5” RC budget boost and Method MR312’s with a -12 offset and put on 315 K/O 2’s the tires do stick out a little but not bad, the only downside is when it’s all clean you have to stay clear of any puddles on the streets and it throws some rocks

Thanks for all this info about offset. I was thinking of some Fuel Brutes in 20x12.5x9. They have them in I think 1 or -18 for the 20x10. Seems like the 1 offset would be what I want for a small amount of rubber past the fender similar to the white Rubicon above.

Just ask @cosine he knows!
Hard to say what ideal offset/backspacing would be as everyone has different tastes and uses for their Jeeps, and different tire sizing. Ideal offset for minimal fender poke on a 8.5 would be in the +18 range from what info I've been getting, and +25 on a 9 (using a 12.5 tire width).
YMMV :)

Thank you to everyone responding to these posts - so helpful!

For my incoming '19 JLUR - with a planned 2-3" lift - I'm planning on running Milestar Patagonia 37" tires with either Method Roosts 17x8.5 with 0 offset, Black Rhino Warlords 17x9 with -12 offset or XD Rockstar IIs 17x9 with -12 offset. Will there be a huge difference in how far the tires stick out? Will I rub with this setup?

Thank you for any and all answers...

The 9 w/-12offset will stick out 12mm more for the offset and 6 mm more for the 1/2" wider wheel, so a net 18mm further out than the 8.5 +0.

Was doing some clearance testing on our mid-width bumper and thought these photos may be of interest:
  • Lift is a Mopar 2" with the kit's bump stop extensions
  • Tires are 37" Nitto Trail Grapplers
  • Wheels are Mamba M14 Intel 17 x 9" with 5.47" backspacing
The only contact point is the grill, so it looks like that will either need to be trimmed, more bump will need to be added, or we will have to take out some steering. All other clearance looks pretty good.

I believe with the Rubicon's you can get away with 5 to 5.5" of backspace. Quadratec, AEV and Mopar have the most options for the increased offsets. Trail Ready and Raceline for beadlocks.

What’s the most backspacing we can use for a Sport or Sahara? Is 3.5 too low or 5+ too much?

Depends how much tire you want to run, up to a 12.5" (315) width you can run offsets in the +18 on a 8.5" or +25 on a 9, should be about 5.5 backspacing I believe.

As said, it depends on personal taste and state laws--

My tires are HANKOOK DYNAPRO LT315/75X16 BS 4.5" and I don't have any inspection requirements--
