With all the talk(justifiably), about the 3.6 engine and the head gaskets going bad, at relatively low mileage, it has me wondering. Does anyone make a heavy duty head gasket for the 3.6, that can last 200-300k miles, at least?

it's not the head gaskets that are failing. the heads arent being torqued properly at the plant and loosen over time causing the eventual gasket failure. general ballpark is between 50-75k miles on average before they start leaking.

some end up never having an issue, though. generally if you make it to 80k you're in the clear

@alphawolff Are you sensing a low(er) break-away torque on head bolts during disassembly? Sounds like you are noticing some bolts don't feel as tight as others. Just curious.

Not that I'm disagreeing, but how does this happen? I assume the engine is built mostly by robots. I picture this machine that torques all the head bolts at one time, staggers and torques them down.

I would imagine things that humans install would be the entire seat, entire engine, entire wiring harnesses, etc. But I would imagine that the big parts get made by robots. I always wondered about it though... You hear about certain lots of builds have these issues....is it a human or is it the programming of a machine?

If you are replacing your head gaskets, replace the torque to yield bolts with an ARP 8740 heat treated head stud kit..... Prodigy Perfermance sells some kits.....also verify head and block straightness and resurface if needed.

Not sure, but that's what's going on. The torque is a torque + angle type deal, so it's possible the angle thing is just too vague.

Just how labor intensive is going in, and re-tightening the head bolts. My engine is fine, so far, it would just be a paranoid preventative thing. If it can be done.

Felpro lists head gaskets for the 3.6. I don't know if they're better, worse or identical to the Mopar gaskets.
